Advantages: No sleeping pills
Disadvantages: It might take awile to find what works for you
I used to fall asleep the minute my head hit the pillow. But not lately, now it seems like I toss and turn for hours. I have tried hot milk, relaxation tapes and counting sheep. Then I tried a couple of things that actually works for me, and is better than a sleeping pill. Many who suffer from insomnia are simply turning in too early. My doctor told me to go to bed one hour later than usual, and by doing this, and following these strategies, that I would get amazing results. And using the right pillow is a must because more than half of us are awakened at night by the aches and stiffness caused by using the wrong pillow! How to choose the right one? That depends on your favorite sleeping position. If you sleep on your side, try a firm pillow to ease the stress on your neck and shoulders. If you sleep on your back. Choose a medium-density pillow that will properly align your neck and back. Sleep on your stomach? You need a soft pillow. Try indulging yourself with something sweet before retiring. In fact, one of the best bedtime snacks is a glass of milk and a couple of cookies (any kind but chocolate since the caffeine in chocolate can keep you awake). L-tryptophan, an amino acid in milk, helps you relax, while the sugar in the cookies enables the transfer of tryptophan to the brain, where it is converted to a natural sleep-inducing brain chemical. The hot water trick that can make you sleep even better. You should draw your bath 90 minutes to two hours before bedtime. Many people make the mistake of bathing just before climbing between the sheets, but that doesn't give your body a chance to cool down properly, and that cooling down process is what makes you drowsy. In fact, a bath right before bed can overstimulate you and keep you awake! These strategies really did help me get off of my sleeping-pills and has given me control over my Insomnia.

- 01/04/02 A good example of how a short opinion here can be very useful. Some helpful ideas for people there. I do also see Alkaliguru's point, though I'm only a *mostly* pointless pedant so I decided on a VU for the category it was in.
