Advantages: NONE

Disadvantages: everything under the sun huts

Cluster Migraine is the worst of the lot.
My clusters last for up to five weeks, and are pretty much resentless, I spend more time having an attack, than I do in serenity.
Clusters are normal migraines, back to back for an unspecified amount of time.

They are very common in women around mensturation periods. But is very rare in men (just my luck eh?), They are commonly associated with Tri-geminal neuralgia, which is the nerve in the side of your face (from your hair-line to your chin and everything imbetween) when it has been damaged it causes pain (neuralgia) that feels like you have been plugged in to a couple of thousand volts of electricity pulsating through the side of your face.

I have averaged the amount of time I spend in attack, and it works out that for 38 weeks of the year I have a migraine. I have tried everything going, from migraine pills, to Morphine,Codiene,Cannabis,Tri-cyclics,Beta-blocker s,Anti-imflamatories, Ive tried changing my diet, the amount of sleep I get has been monitored, I've been tested for everything under the sun to try and get to the bottom of it.

In the end I discovered that 95% of migraines are caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain.
This can happen in many ways, you could have low blood pressure, a faulty heart valve, asthma, one lung, trapped arteries (which is what I suffer from)which stops enough blood from reaching the brain. My arteries are trapped in my upper vertibrai (the bottom of my neck and the top of my back.

There are 4 ways of dealing with this:
(in decending order 1-best 4-worst)

1.Use an oxygen mask when pain reaches tolerance limits.

2.Physio-therapy/Chiropractory

3.Beta-blockers/Amytriptlene

4.Surgery (always a last resort)

Now, unfortunatly in this country a doctor will not perscribe oxygen becouse of the costs, eventhough it stops 98% of all migraine dead in it's tracks (trust me, i've tried it).

Doctors are reluctant to refer migraine sufferers to physio or chiropractory, again becouse of the expense, and horrific waiting time (I waited 3 months, then went private).
Success rate a a lean 75%

Beta-blockers and Amytriptlene are expensive drugs, but if you really nead them, the doctor should perscribe these. They work by thinning the blood, so it can reach your brain faster. The success rate is 51%.

Surgery will almost never be considered for migraine sufferers, although I was considered, I refused the Spinal surgery as there are way to many complications that can arise as a result, as the area is very close to my nervous colomn.
Success rate is 61%.

I hope my ramblings can find some use out there. Ta 4 reading.

I'm lucky not to suffer migraines, but have a cousin who does and know how awful they are from seeing her. All the best.

Fascinating stuff. I'm not a migrane sufferer but I know a few people who are. If only treatments like you describe were available over here on the NHS...
