Having suffered with Bells Palsy at the age of 17, I thought I'd give an account of my experience for other dooyoo? Peeps to read. Firstly I'll explain what Bells Palsy actually is. Bells Palsy is a condition that affects your face and causes paralysis of one side. Doctors don't actually know what triggers the disease but it is caused by the "swelling of the facial nerve as it passes from the brain through a narrow bony canal. The swelling results in a loss of the covering layers of the nerve fibres or damage to the nerve fibres themselves." This is an extract from Bupa healthsheets. Before I start let me give you a little bit of background information about my mother and her health. She has cronic asthma, recoverd from breast cancer and has a complete phobia of hospitals and doctors. Her phobia is so bad that after being ventilated in intensive care she discharged herself as soon as she could walk. She has had so many asthma atacks because she refuses to go to the hospital and ends being taken in an ambulance where she has left it so long.
