When I was small I used to love to eat Sunpat Crunchy Peanut Butter. It was gorgous and I used to spread it thickly on my toast in the morning before I went to school. I have a strange nut allergy as it I never knew about it antill 5 years later after I started reacting to food. On special occasions like my dad's birthday and Fathers day my family and I always used to give him praline chocolate shells. I was always offered and I loved them but slowly after time every time that I ate them my mouth became itchy so I stopped. My parents never suspected that I may be allergic to nuts as I could eat as much peanut butter as I wanted and not get the slightest hint of a reaction. As I got older I started to react with more nut products antill I was allergic to all nuts apart from peanuts. My reaction was mild and I just used to get an itchy mouth, face and ears. Slowly I became allergic to peanuts and I could no longer eat the food I loved. It did not effect me badly just very midly so I did not seek medical advice I just stayed away from most forms of nuts. Over the last 3 years my nut allergy has developed from mild to bad. It is hard to say what happens to me as it usually varies depending on what type of nut that I eat and I usually don't have the time to find out. Most people say that I should always ask what is in the food before I eat it but it is rather hard as I live in Saudi Arabia over the school holidays and it is hard to get through to them what a nut is. It is a bit like trying to communicate with an ant. They really haven't got a clue what you are talking about so you just go with what you know. I told the school about how my nut allergy was getting worse and how it gets worse every time I get a nut so they gave my some priton tablets and a injection pen which I am suposed to carry around everywhere with me with I thought was stupid so I never carry it with me but it is always nearby. They say I
should have it everytime I go out but that is stupid as its not like I am going to go out and be force fed a nut. My reactions have defeintly got worse to a point at which I am rather worried. I am only 15 and I could die from it, if I have a bad reaction. I was in a restaurant and I had a small amount of my brothers curry and I had an extremly terrifying reaction as I had never experienced anything so horrible. It was so much worse than my last reaction. The curry that I ate I think had almonds in it and my mouth started to itch and I got the most terrible stomach pain that I felt like I was going to die. I got all hot and my throut swelled up so that I found it hard to breathe. I felt like my head was about to explode and I was crying with pain and discomfort. The worst thing about it was that I was not let out of the restaurant as it was pray time and they don't let anyone out at that time. I was rushed home and by that time a rash had spread through out my body which looked like I had jumped in a huge bush of stinging neetles. I didn't have my injection so I had to just take my tablets and I felt ill for ages. I was continually sick but nothing came up but water with the hint of nut in it. It was an endless circle as it came out of me but went through my mouth to get out so irraited my throut and mouth even more. It was so frightening as you can't control it or stop it. My next experience was at school when I ate a cake that had been made with nuts in it. I ran back to my boarding house and took my tablets. This reaction wasn't that extreme but I didn't know if it would get worse so I went up to the health centre where they decided to call an ambulance. They made me feel worse as all the nurses in the health centre kept talking about was how exciting it was to be dialing 999 and that was the last thing that I cared about. I ended up being OK the hospital were really nice about it. The most recent of my ex
periences was a few weeks ago in Saudi Arabia were I was eating my favourite food a Cinnabon. This is a really nice cinnamon roll. If you ever get the chance to try one then don't pass it up. I was eating one but they also make a Pecanbon with has Pecans on it hence the name. They had used the same utensils to remove the Cinnabon that I was eating that they had used to remove the Pecanbon. I only realised after I had eaten the whole thing what had happened to me and my lip enlarged on one side and it was soo huge it at least tripled. I started to feel ill but it luckly never went past that. I never know what reaction will happen so I always must be aware and I know that I am have been lucky and that as I get older it will get worse and one day it may get the better of me or I will not be fast enough to treat the problem.

- 20/03/02 Very interesting. I particularly liked the ant analogy. ;-) |

- 22/08/01 Thanks for all the information. It sounds really horrid, and I send lots of sympathy, since it must make you have to watch food all the time - but it's good to know about the condition. |
