Advantages: Just about the strongest pain relief you can get without a prescription

Disadvantages: Don't work for every condition

My husband has a broken back, and is prescribed a morphine based painkiller by the doctor. However, whenever he needs a new prescription, it normally involves a long drawn out argument with the health service to get them, as they need to make sure he isn't addicted to them. This would be highly unlikely seeing as 12 tablets have lasted him 4 years, however that's neither here nor there.

In a vain attempt to get him some sort of pain relief until the doctor agreed to give him some more tablets, I went to the local chemist and asked them for their strongest painkillers. They gave me Paramol - of which each tablet contains 500mg Paracetamol and 46mg Dihydrocodeine, which should be enough to cure the mother of all headaches.

Unfortunately, due to the level of pain that my husband suffers, they haven't done an awful lot for him, which just goes to show that the doctor was way off the mark when he told him to go home and take some paracetamol. However, I'm sure that for almost any other painful condition, these would help.

They cost £2.45 for 12 tablets.

At 46mg of Dihydrocodeine, it probably would knock out an elephant - they only contain 7.46mg per tablet.

Still, they're very good. I have a bad tooth abbcess and these knock the spots off the other painkillers I've bought,

If your husband contacted his local health 'quango' made up of GP's, consultants and lay people (details from the council offices) they may be able to help him.
