Advantages: none
Disadvantages: doens't do what it claims to
I've just bought my very first hair-straightening device! I feel like a traitor to my curls. But the thing is, yesterday I went to the hairdressers for a trim, and she decided to dry it straight...so after much head pulling and steam, I had beautifully straight hair. I couldn't believe it. All these years I thought that if my hair suddenly went straight I would look like a freak. But turns out the effect is more sex kitten, with my highlights looking lighter, and the feathering around my face beautifully framing it. Oh god, what do I do now?? Well, plan A, stick to what you've got - I'm not going to be one of those girls who takes their straightener out with them! However, plan B, is invest in a straightener and straighten hair when I want to shock friends. Hummm, good plan. So I headed off to Argos as they seemed to have the best selection, and bought a mid-range one, which when I got to the counter was 3 pounds less than advertised. The 3 in 1 steam styler has 3 plates which you can change for waves, crimping and straightening. It features "Gentle steam", which protects your hair and ensures that your style stays in place for longer. Out of the packet, it looks quite plastic, but this is the first I've seen, so I didn't hold that against it. I read the instruction, and plugged it in. However, heating was a little confusing as it seemed to have an indicator light to tell you when it was on, but nothing to tell you when it was hot enough. I was also a little nervous with where to place it to heat up. So, I have said I have very curly hair, but right now, it has just been blow dried straight, got drizzled on last night so it has a couple of kinks in the top layers, but my hair is basically straight now. So I decided to try it on the kinks. When it seemed to be hot enough I tried to use it, holding it for a few seconds as instructed, on each area. The result was just so disappoin
ting. Some water had trickled down to my hand from the reservoir - which I had clicked back as instructed - and this made me a little nervous. I thought maybe I was holding it at a strange angle, so I took a piece right from the front and tried again. this time my hair was damp and visibly more frizzy than before. How disappointing. All in all, whilst I have nothing to compare this to, I would definately not recommend it in any way. Maybe the crimper or waves attachments work better, but as I think that water and lack of steam was a problem here, I doubt that they would be any different.

- 13/04/02 I bought the Babyliss version. It works quite well, although doesn't get the hair perfectly straight - those telly adverts are a complete farce! |

- 21/10/01 hummm, I know Sexy Kay, like so many things in life. I'm generally pretty happy with my curly hair though - think you have to get on with what you've got, and be happy with that! |

- 20/10/01 Sounds a disappointment! Strange that we always want what we haven't got: straight if curly, curly if straight. Nice op - Kay |
