Advantages: Save money by not visiting barbers, No assembly required, Cheap
Disadvantages: Not cordless, Needs practice
After watching how easy it was for the barber to shave my grade 1 hair and then cringe giving him £4 for his relaxed job, I thought it?s about time to give this ?art? a try. Searching through the catalogue (lazy I know!!) I came across the Remington Barbershop clipper set. The main features that grabbed my eye straight away were the video on ?How to cut your hair? and basically the fact ?Barbershop? was mentioned in the title. CONTENTS 1 x of clippers (handy, obviously) 1 x video 1 x lubricant (for the blades?) 1 x cleaning brush (blades again) 6 x grading attachments (grades 3, 7, 9, 12, 18 and 25mm) 1 x pair scissors (for those styles the clippers can?t handle) 2 x ear trimming attachments (for around the ears, not inside!) At £19.99 I thought they were going to be a load of garbage and I?d be in the barbers the next day with an incident of ?lost a battle with a lawnmower?. The video was very informative, giving tips on how to cut hair with less strokes (i.e. cut against the grain of the hair) and also tips on how to maintain your clippers. After watching it, and plucking up some courage, I decided to give it a go. My barbershop consisted of a swivel chair placed on top of two towels, with a mirror in front of me. A second mirror is a good idea to see what you?re cutting at the back of your head. There was no assembly in the clippers (i.e. no wiring or fusing etc), simply plug and play. I decided to go against putting an attachment on, and the blade lever fully open ? this is about a grade 1. Following the instructions, I lubed the blades then went against the grain and started shaving the top of my head. I found that a few strokes are needed to get rid of those annoying hairs that manage to escape the blades the first time round. The clippers give off that lovely buzzing sound and vibration for that unique barbershop feel (well its bound to, but its something to write!
). It?s virtually impossible to cut yourself using them, so it is a safe product. One disadvantage is the cord getting in the way now and again as it?s not cordless. After a reasonable first attempt which took around 30 minutes(!!), I was pleased I didn?t need to hand over any cash to the smug barber. Nowadays, after several weeks of cutting my hair using these clippers, I am much more experienced and have cut the time it takes down to a measly 15 minutes. The main advantage I?ve had from buying these clippers is the small fortune I?ve saved, around £28 at the moment. Be warned, don?t expect to be a professional after your first try, it does get frustrating until you finally suss out which technique works for you (I suggest the videos technique). Happy clipping and happy saving!

- 07/09/02 Good op ! Be careful though, I know quite a few people who do it themselves and have had little 'accidents' (bare patches...) Ever happened to you ?
