Advantages: No need for soap and water, Quick and easy
Disadvantages: Not a replacement for good hand washing
Not being one to pass up a good offer, when I saw a 65ml bottle of Palmolive Antibacterial Instant hand cleanser for 65pence in my local Boots Chemists, I just had to try this stuff out! Now, seeing as I'm training to be a nurse, we use stuff like this quite often (I know it as "Spirigel") and I always found it to be very effective. So what is it? Well, this Hand cleanser is basically a substitute for washing your hands, in that it kills germs without the need for soap and water. In order for this to work, your hands should be visibly clean (it isn't designed to shift visible dirt), apply a small amount to your hands and rub them together as you would if you were washing your paws. How does it work? Basically this "Soap" contains alcohol (not for drinking though :P), meaning that it will kill germs and quickly evaporate into the air leaving your hands feeling dry with a slight hint of a perfumed smell, but no sticky residue. Due to the alcohol in it, I have found this stuff great for shifting any ink marks that you may get on your hands. Palmolive's instant hand cleanser contains a moisturiser so meaning that the alcohol it contains does not affect your skin. I found this to be really handy, especially when on my community placement as I was going in and out of various people's houses and it was not possible to wash my hands. This little solution fitted easily into my pocket and meant that I could use it whenever my hands needed a little freshening up. I can see that this hand cleanser would be great if you were travelling or in the car - especially with children - on those occasions when you are out for the day and it's not possible to wash your hands before a meal for example. Obviously this should never replace good hand washing but it is a great substitute when it's not possible to wash your hands or in between washing your hand
s, in a handy travel size bottle, making it perfect for any time.

- 29/06/01 I'd never heard of the stuff but I think I'll try that out!
I used to use facial wipes in a similar way, but wasn't sure if it was really doing any good. This sounds a bit more practical. |
