Advantages: a good one, used regularly & as directed may help reduce dental bills?
Disadvantages: huge choice which can be confusing
There seem to be differing opinions expressed by those who work in the fields of oral & dental health re: the efficacy of mouthwashes. I'm no expert but I don't feel my teeth have been cleaned properly or my mouth as fresh as it could be without the use of a mouthwash.
I've tried loads over the years & ( right or wrong) I am of the opinion that you basically pay for what you get. The cheaper ones seem to taste weaker & the effects don't seem to last as long?
Amongst my favourites are the following which I try to buy if/when on offer -
Listerine - this comes in different flavours & types. I like the whitening one & the original but be warned they may be far too strong for some people.
Dentyl - these funky bottles are the ones you shake & when you rinse out it shows what c***p comes out with it from your mouth. The taste is much more pleasant but it costs around £2.19 - £2.99.
Corsodyl - this tastes pretty nasty but our dentst recommended it for my hubby to stop any further gum infection. I tried using this but stopped when a fellow Dooyooer alerted me to the fact it may stain the teeth. Hubby still uses it though.
Plax - usually on offer in supermarkets - like many washes these come in a variety of colours - green, red & blue. A decent mouthwash which makes the teeth feel nice & keeps the halitosis at bay.
The mouthwashes I've not been too impressed by include the following -
Boots Total Care - Ok but the effects don't seem to last for long.
Tesco Total Care - OK but the same as above really & the taste isn't very strong.
Blanx - I thought this was too expensive for what it claims to do.
Smokers' mouthwashes, in my opinion, don't do any more than good mouthwashes only they are more pricey.
Although I try to save money wherever possible I won't 'down-brand' on my mouthwashes as you only get 1 set of teeth & gums plus I see it as an investment hoping to reduce any future dental bills!
summary
~
- so many to choose from!
- in my opinion ( I might be wrong) you basically pay for what you get.
- essential for my teeth-cleaning routine - brush, floss then use mouthwash.
- whether it's for sensitive teeth, children's mouthwas, smokers , whitening or 'normal' there's probably a brand out there to satify all needs.
Summary: essential for healthy oral care in my opinion

- 18/03/09 Yeas I was put off the corsodyl when I read the label and it said about the whole teeth staining thing. For that reason alone it has remained unopened. |
