Advantages: Refreshing, Coloured Stripes
Disadvantages: None
It's funny but I've never been loyal to one particular brand of toothpaste. Although I tend to go for the major brands, like Colgate, I am always happy to try any brand as long as it is reasonably priced. Having squeezed every last bit of toothpaste from my existing tube of Colgate Whitening, it was time to go shopping. So off I went to Morrisons to see what I could find. Despite the plethora of brand names and own-label toothpastes on display, I eventually opted for a tube of Aquafresh 'Fresh and Minty'.
* What made me choose Aquafresh? *
Not surprisingly, the main reason for me buying Aquafresh was the price. At only 91p (100ml tube), it is excellent value for money, especially as most other brands cost well over a pound nowadays. I also liked the idea of a three-in-one formula. You see, Aquafresh is different to other toothpastes in that it is a striped toothpaste, with three distinctive coloured stripes. Each one does something different. The red stripe fights plaque and protects gums, the white stripe fights decay and protects teeth and the blue stripe freshens breath.
* The Packaging *
Aquafresh is a tube and box affair, not one of your more expensive 'pump' toothpastes. The box is bright and stands out from other brands. It is mostly light blue in colour and each face of the box has a flash of whiteness which contains the 'Aquafresh' logo and familiar red, white and blue stripe.
Open the box and you'll notice that the tube looks like any other tube of toothpaste, with its standard flip-top lid. The tube is a virtual replica of the box. It is mostly blue and white and you'll find the same information on the reverse of the tube as you find on the box.
* Directions *
Before you can start using the toothpaste, you have to pierce a foil-like strip which helps keep it fresh. Then you can squeeze out the toothpaste. For children under 7 years of age, it is recommended that you use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. It is also important to minimise swallowing because of the presence of fluoride in the toothpaste. This particularly applies to children who might like the taste and want to swallow. Young children should therefore be supervised by an adult when brushing.
* The Brushing Experience *
As you start brushing, the toothpaste quickly diffuses into a creamy, silky mixture. The minty flavour comes through instantly, but it isn't as strong as that of other toothpastes. This is why it is probably a good choice of toothpaste for children. Although the flavour is not that intense, it is very refreshing all the same and leaves your teeth feeling fresh and clean. I also like the way the minty flavour and sensation of freshness lasts for quite a while after brushing.
* How effective is Aquafresh? *
This is a difficult question to answer, as I have only been using Aquafresh for a few days! However, it certainly leaves breath feeling fresh and I have no doubts that it also fights plaque and helps reduce decay.
* My Opinion *
Overall, I like Aquafresh and, although it is aimed more at children than adults, it is still an excellent toothpaste which effectively protects teeth and gums. I would certainly recommend you try it.

- 13/09/05 Toothpaste effectiveness is rightly a hard one to judge... I tend to stick to branded products that guard against everything that way you can't go too wrong. Aquafresh is a good toothpaste and have used it regularly over the years. A lovely review to read, that was well presented. Vicky :-D |
