Advantages: worth understanding (despite such a name)
Disadvantages: must be common sense
Psychoneuroimmunolgy ( wait while I get my tongue untwisted) is a field which has come to prominence of late. Funny thing is that lot of traditional medicine men have been using the principle since we climbed down from the trees and started setting up homes. Although recent scientific advances have helped to confirm what we all have long suspected ( mind over matter- read the excellent previous opinion for scientific proof) few people take heed. Being confident and happy ( even content) is not something we all are good at. We worry. Now worry makes you stressed. Stress makes you produce a lot of unnecessary hormones that impeded your immune system. So when you have an encounter with a wayward bug you have a poor defence. You fall ill. The reason modern medicine has recently come under a lot of flak and falling into disrepute is because doctors have long given up saying ' don't worry' ( 'cos they end up getting sued!). Everyone is panicking about 'missing' an illness and hence a lot of people get investigated unnecessarily. The media does not help. Open any daily newspapaer and there is a 'campaign' against some illness- however exotic it may be. It won't be long before we are reading the Daily Mail double page spread on 'African Sleeping sickness- the deadly 'sleeping beauty' bug! As a result most people live in a state of health paranoia. The media magnifies the failings of NHS ( and God knows there are many) but fails to promote a sense of well being. When was the last time someone getting cured, or quickly diagnosed made headlines??? On the other hand alternative therapies use Psychoneuroimmunolgy- ie., the power of suggestion and confidence very well. Prudent understanding and normal precautions ( like checking one's breasts, making sure you go to your Doctor when something feels wrong) are fine. But a lot of people out there live in such fear of Cancer that they actually
fail to go t othe Doctor when a lump appears because they are so afraid- thus delaying the diagnosis. This brings us back to the paradox of psychoneuroimmunology. The more you worry about your health- THE MORE LIKELY you're to FALL ILL! So in the immortal words of MONTY PYTHON: Always look on the bright side of life! ( now let me go and check my throat- it kinda feels scratchy!)
