When I was about seven, my parents bought a new suite, and for about two weeks, stored the old one in my bedroom. During the night, I would often "wake up" and see a strange and eerie looking alien sitting on the couch. Even with all my seven years of wisdom, I knew it wasn't alltogether great that there was an alien in my bedroom and would try and yell for help. Unfortunately, I couldn't. What is Sleep Paralysis? Sleep Paralysis is a disorder of sleep (or perhaps better put, a disorder of arousal). Why some people are more prone to it than others isn't really known but I have noticed in my own experience and through talking to other sufferers that it can be connected to stress. Common factors include complete paralysis, panic, sensing evil (nowadays alien) presence's, feeling suffocated/unable to breath properly. The incubus was spawned from tales of sleep paralysis. Have you ever woken to find, although everything appears normal, that you're unable to interact with your surroundings? You can't move... you are somehow completely paralysed! There's a fair chance you have... Apparently, when you enter REM sleep, your brain releases a chemical to your muscles which paralyses them; the idea being that when you're dreaming of being chased, your legs aren't thrashing about in the bed, etc. Similarly, as you awaken from this state, this chemical production is stopped.
