Is smoking really an addiction? Or is it more of a habit? Personally, I think it boils down to beliefs. When we tell someone we are going to try and give up smoking they ridicule us and say 'ah, you'll never give up' or 'I'll give you a week' and say 'it's difficult you know'. The problem is then, that they are pumping these negative opinions into your mind. You then start to believe that giving up smoking really is difficult and that there is some kind of physical addiction.

However, a craving only lasts for a very short period of time before it disappears for a significantly longer period of time. Once that craving has disappeared you've forgotten about wanting a cigarette and carry on doing what you were doing.

I have learnt from personal experience that giving up smoking is not difficult at all. In fact, I'd even go to the extent to say that I don't believe that smoking is addictive either. The point where I actually gave up smoking was the point where I just really didn't want to smoke any more. I got to the point where all the negative comments I was receiving made me even more determined to give up.

Basically, I decided to see myself as a non-smoker and imagined myself being the person I used to be before I started smoking. I also identified all the 'cue' that led me into wanting a cigarette and used NLP techniques to eliminate those cues.

I think another mistake that smokers make when trying to give up is that they 'try' to give up. By 'trying' to do something you are not actually doing it, you are trying and the word 'try' assumes that you are going to fail. Basically, I think that everything comes down to beliefs.

Summary: Why breathe in dirt?
