Advantages: they get rid of the flies!!
Disadvantages: eerie, creepy, dusty, ugly
I find this quite an awkward subject to write about, though I have suffered with arachnophobia previously to quite an extent. I wouldn't say that I was completely over the phobia though. This actually seems to be one of the most common of phobias, along with chlostrophobia and agoraphobia.
It seems that most people are not afraid of smaller spiders but are scared of bigger ones, as was in my case. From my learning and interest in hypnosis, NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and the like, I discovered that this is because in our minds we define the memories of these spiders as bigger, clearer more defined images. Some phobias can also be introduced by some of kind of emotional experience that may have happened years ago. I also believe that this may be true in my case, as my family decided to play a trick on me when I was a young child with a huge fake spider which scared the wits out of me! I locked myself in the bathroom for hours!!
The way I reduced my fear of spiders was by taking the mental image of the experience in my mind, fading away the colur, make it blurry and unclear then zoom out on in so I'm just left with a very small unclear blurry image in my mind. I repeated this process three or four times a day for three or four weeks and I started to notice a huge change in response to spiders. As simple as it may be, this technique has helped me to deal with several situations since.
Summary: can be quite chilling at times!
