They oscillate with the movement of the fluid in the canal in response to the transmission of soundwaves from the eardrum via the tinny bones in the middle ear, or at least, they do when they're working properly. Once they stop working it appears that the brain tries to compensate for the absence of nerve signals by generating noises it expects to be hearing. It is thought that they can be damaged by a number of causes. The most likely is damag...more

Premium Review Tinnitus: Pardon!? (1110 words)
by - written on 23/02/08 (Very useful, 73 readings)
Rating:

About 20 years ago I woke up one morning with a loud hissing noise in one ear. It must have happened some time during the night because it wasn't there the evening before. I was surprised that it hadn't woken me up at the time. Maybe it had; perhaps it had only just happened. It was annoying but it didn't affect me too much other than that it seemed louder when the background noise was low. I assumed that it would go away again in time but it didn't, not that day nor any day. Three months later I woke up with the same noise in my other ear. At least now I was "in balance"! Now it did start affecting me. Strangely, it didn't affect ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review sorry, what did you say (780 words)

If you have ever suffered or know of a fellow sufferer of Tinnius then you will know what a disability it may be, and unlike any other cannot be seen by others so no one knows that you suffer from this condition. The meaning and use of sound is of enormous importance. The auditory system evolved in animals because they are constantly in fear of their lives from attack by predators. The important quality that these warning signals had was that they produced anxiety in the animal, ensuring that it would take appropriate action to avoid attack. We have this experience every day with sounds that alarm us, such as car horns, and sounds that soothe us, such ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Tinnitus: Am I hearing things? (1023 words)
by - written on 13/12/01 (Very useful, 163 readings)
Rating:

Tinnitus Tinnitus is the name given to the condition of noises in the ears and/or in the head with no external source. Tinnitus noises are described variously as ringing, buzzing and humming (quote from British Tinnitus Association). The name comes from the Latin word "tinnire" which means to ring. Tinnitus is a condition that affects around 10% of the UK adult population and it is quite a common symptom of ME. Tinnitus does not cause hearing loss, but the feeling of having to listen harder to hear things makes you more aware of the Tinnitus. If you do have a hearing loss it is not caused by Tinnitus, but those who do have a hearing loss ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Silence is Golden! (837 words)

If you said to someone that there were noises in your head they’d think you were mad! I hear these noises but NO WAY are you going to find me (or anyone else with tinitus) in a mental asylum. Instead you’ll most probably find me in my room playing the clarinet or piano in a practise room somewhere at university. So here I am studying for a degree in Music! I love it! And I have few troubles on the course (apart from listening – on a bad day!). I’ve faced the fact that I’m not deaf, I can hear and there is nothing that I can do to overcome it – apart from putting my mind off of it. Tinnitus is a hearing ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Tinnitus Demonstration (131 words)
by - written on 24/03/03 (Somewhat useful, 166 readings)
Rating:

If any of you want to know what Tinnitus sounds like go my link http://www.hypnosishealthcare.com/Demo1.html I have seen patients with Buzzing, Whistling, Hissing, and tones that change (more likely jaw/tension related). I fortunatly do not have tinnitus but after treating patients and listening to their sounds (emulated on the computer) I can understand a bit of what they go through. Most do habituate in time, but before this it can take over your life. There is a lot of research being down and there is a great Moderated Tinnitus forum on http://pub126.ezboard.com/ftinnitussupport92262frm1 For anyone who ...  Read the complete review
