Advantages: relaxation, keeps you limber, great stress reducer
Disadvantages: the moves are done slowly, not a lot of activity, need to start slow and work your way up
I started yoga about 3 years ago as I was having a lot of joint pain,especially in the one hip. I really didn't have very big expectations and the first class seemed like we barely did anything and was a bit boring. But by the time I got home I noticed the pain was gone! And I slept so well that night that I have been hooked ever since! I started taking classes from different teachers and found no two are alike, you just need to find the teacher for you to enjoy it. I found mine and she is 79 years old! You would think she was in her 50's to see her and limber as a 20 year old. This is how I want to be at 79 years old!!!!! I was reading some of the opinions of people that tried yoga and didn't like it and was sad that they didn't seem to understand. It is not like other exercise and there is a mind-body connection that you become aware of. It helps you relax and reduce tension,anxiety and depression. The poses help your joints,muscles and inner organs, especially the glands. Yoga also helps you balance your body and we get a lot of ballet dancers in our classes,people of all ages are there and in all levels of health. Heart patients,people on chemo,young people, old people,it doesn't matter as they are all getting benefit from it. It really isn't a way to lose weight, or build big muscles as that is what the other forms of exercise are for and they all have their place. A lot of the poses are meant to stimulate the thyroid gland and this could be useful if one is having a weight problem because of a sluggish thyroid. Also once you do some yoga you will start to feel better and find you have more energy and then maybe you will want to add other forms of exercise to your program. I hope this will inspire some that have been wondering about yoga to try it out and maybe others will sometime give it another chance. Good health to you all!

- 23/02/02 I love the idea of yoga, and try my best - unfortunately, I can't join a class at the moment, so it's just videos and books at the moment! I haven't been able to do any this past week and I am so stiff and achy it's unbelievable! |
