Advantages: great films, great decade
Personally I think that the 90's was the best decade for films. There was everything from Titanic to Home Alone 2. Film directors were at their best and they managed to come up with some of the best films around. Thousands of films went through the box office in the 90's and a lot will not be remembered. I will now list my favourite ten movies of the nineties.
This hit managed to be huge with the crowds. Thousands of people watched Robin Williams and Kirsten Dunst strut their stuff in this great film about a board game.
Alan Parish finds a board game back in the 70's and decides to play it with one of his friends. He ends up getting sucked into the board game and being forced to live in the jungle. Then in 1995 a brother called Peter and a sister called Judy find the game in their attic and begin playing it. As they go through the game everything comes out of it, from gunmen to giant spiders. Even monkeys and giant mosquitoes. They have to finish the game to get rid of everything. As they battle their way through monsoons and stampedes they struggle to finish. This is a great film for all the family.
9. Home Alone 2;
McCauley Caulkin once again stars as Kevin, a boy in a very large family. This time instead of getting on the plane to Paris with his family he accidentally gets on the one to New York. There, with his dads credit cards, books himself into the most expensive hotel in New York. He then meets up with the burglars that tried to rob his house back at home. As they chase him around New York he has to think of more ways to catch them and put them away where they belong. This, again, is a great film for all the family especially at Christmas.
8. My Girl;
With it's star actors this was always guaranteed to be a hit. This was released at the very start of the nineties and stars Anna Chlumsky, McCauley Caulkin, Jamie Lee Curtis and Dan Ackroyd.
Veda is an 11-year-old girl who lives with
her father in a funeral parlour. Her mum died when she was born. Veda and her best friend Thomas J, do everything together. Then when a new woman enters her father's life she begins to get jealous and does everything she can to split them up. One day Veda looses her ring in the woods and when Thomas J goes back to find it something happens to him that will devastatingly change Veda's life forever. A great film about two best friends.
7. Practical Magic
I bought this film a long time ago when it came out on video. I like it because it is an intriguing film that keeps you guessing the whole way through. It stars Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock.
The Owens sisters, Sally and Jillian, grew up with their aunts and were accused of being witches all their lives. The thing is they are, but they have a curse hanging over them, every man they truly love will come to an untimely death. Then when one of Jillian’s boyfriends turns evil and kidnaps them in c car they accidentally kill him. Then they bring him back to life with a spell. When that doesn't work and they kill him again he starts to get back at them in a weird way. Then a policeman comes sniffing around looking for the dead guy (Jimmy). The girls get themselves into a bit of a tangle with their lies. Will they get out of it and will it cost anyone their lives? You'll have to watch the film to find out...
This is yet another great film and has some great acting in it.
After some kidnappers steal a load of dogs, the dogs manage to escape and a little St Bernard puppy is left by itself. That is, until he finds a home with a family keen to keep him. They end up calling him Beethoven and they care for him. When an evil man tries to pretend that Beethoven bit him and that he has to be put down the family are devastated. But the youngest child sees through him and convinces the others that Beethoven didn’t bite the man. They go to rescue him but will
they get there in time? Another excellent family film.
5. Never Been Kissed;
I bought this on video a little while ago after I had hired it. I like it because it goes into a lot of depth about what a reporter has to go through if they are sent undercover. It also is quite a funny film, which makes it better. It stars Drew Barrymore and David Arquette.
Wannabe reporter Josie works in a newspaper office, she is very shy and doesn’t take much care in her appearance, and her nickname at school was Josie Grosey. Then when she is sent to do a report undercover about high schools she fears that she will be reliving those horrible days at school. But she takes the job and things go from bad to worse, nobody likes her and she sees history repeating itself that is until her brother goes back to school to help her out. He soon becomes popular and helps Josie to become popular as well. Soon she is hanging around with the popular people and is living the dream she had all that time ago. But she falls in love with her English teacher and it looks like he falls in love with her too. Then at the prom after she is elected prom queen, but her dream is shattered when the popular girls decide to play a trick on a friend she had before she became popular. This forces her to confess her secret and blow her cover. Will this be the end of her career as a journalist and will the teacher never want to see her again?
4. Girl, Interrupted;
I bought this on video with my dooyoo miles, I love watching it. I like it because it is a touching story and shows you what life was really like then. It stars Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie.
When troubled 19-year-old Susannah Kaysen is sent to a psychiatric hospital for a 'rest' her life changes dramatically. Whilst there she meets a girl called Lisa who has been there for years. She makes life more fun and then when they stay up all night in the corridor Lisa is moved to a different ward and Susannah beco
mes depressed. This is in 1967 and one night Lisa and Susannah decide to run away. Whilst running they stay at a girl who used to be in the hospital, Lisa taunts her and the morning after they find that she has hung herself. Lisa takes her money and runs while Susannah is left devastated and goes back to the home. It shows what life was really like then and it is definitely a heart-warming true story of a troubled girl.
3. American Pie;
I love this film because it is hilarious, apart from Road Trip this is the funniest film around, and like road trip this one also stars Sean William Scott.
Four high school guys make a pact with each other to all get laid before their prom. As they each battle to get a girl to go out with them they struggle to find any that are actually interested in them. One of the four finds a choirgirl that he likes and joins the choir in order to impress her. But this fails when she over hears him bragging to his mates about her. Another guy gets a girl to spread a rumour that he is great in bed, this works very well until someone reveals that it isn’t true and he ends up going out with someone he wouldn’t usually look at let alone go out with. Will they fulfil their pact or go to college a virgin? Watch and find out.
2. 10 things I hate about you;
This is a teenage comedy about a very complicated romance story. It is full of funny bits and although it isn’t the best comedy it is still one of my favourites. It stars Julia Stiles. This film is based on Shakespeare’s ‘The Taming of the shrew’.
Bianca and Cat are both sisters and have a very strict and uptight father. He has a rule, Bianca can’t date until Cat does, but this will probably never happen because Cat is the school shrew. A guy named Cameron really wants to date Bianca and he has no money to pay anyone to date Cat. So he decides to use model Joey who also wants to date Bianca as a pawn so that whilst he pays
someone to date Cat he can make a move on Bianca. It all sounds very complicated but it does get worse. Joey pays a tough guy to go out with Cat. This proves to be very difficult so as he tries harder he gets paid more and more. After spending time with Cat he begins to fall for her and realises that she is worth more than money. It is a very complicated but funny tale, worth watching.
I got this for Christmas a few years ago and have watched it about 8 times so far. It is a good film and portrays really well the true horror that was the Titanic. It stars Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. You would have probably seen or heard of this film as it is very well known. This has to be the biggest blockbuster of the decade.
Rose, her mother and her fiancÚ Cal are on the Titanic, they are on a journey to New York. The Titanic is a newly built ship that is said to be unsinkable. Meanwhile Jack has just won a ticket on the Titanic in a game of poker. Whilst on the ship Jack sees Rose and falls in love with her, the problem is that Rose is rich and Jack isn’t. One night Rose is so upset that she tries to jump off the back of the ship in order to kill herself, but Jack saves her from this and they begin to fall in love with each other. Jack ends up taking Rose dancing below deck and they have a great time. But disaster strikes when the Titanic hits an iceberg, which rips the boat, leaving it to gradually sink. This sends everyone into a panic, as there are only enough lifeboats for less than half the people on board. Will Jack and Rose survive? Watch the film and find out.
There are my favourite 10 films of the 90’s. They are all great films and I hope you like them. I love watching them and do so all the time.
