Advantages: It was a new sound

Disadvantages: It's not anymore

Garage is in danger. Well thats how i see it. When it first came out it was fresh and funky - something that we as a young generation could say was our sound, was our soundtrack to our lifes not something that was given to us by older generations. As garage broke out in 1999 with tracks by Rosie Gaines etc making it to the UK Top 20 it became more and more commercial. Tunes by Shanks and Bigfoot and Oxide and Neutrino made garage known to the whole nation as these were the crossover tunes. Garage as a sound then believed it needed to cater to this new audience it had acquired while catering for the ones who had been loyal which explains the remixs of most pop tracks and the signing and so many "crews" to record labels where the tunes were not that good and the lyrics made no sense. But underground with the loyalists, tracks were getting so predictable that they could be put into two categories, the vocal tunes that obviously were hoping to break into the commercial section of garage and the charts i.e. DJ Pied Piper and then the 4 by 4 beats that were more towards drum and bass rather than the garage sound it was supposed to be. I guess that explains why some garage djs play more drum and bass in their sets these days. But garage like i said is in danger. Unless it evolves to a new sound or goes back to its true sound instead of being things that it isn't it will lose its core audience, the loyal ones that it started with and will die as quickly as it came about.

I guess any 'new' sound is bound to get old.... that's a fact of life. Question is, can it become a CLASSIC genre?
