A great loss was caused to the world of hip-hop and movie industry by the violent death of outstanding rapper/actor Tupac Shakur at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas 13.09.1996. As the 25-year-old rap star was leaving the Tyson-Sheldon boxing match 7th of September with his entourage (including c.e.o. of Death Row Records,Marion 'Suge' Knight) a white Cadillac pulled to the side of Shakurs ride and opened fire towards the rap star. Four bullets hit Shakur severly and caused his death 6 days later in Las Vegas hospital.
Shakur became known first as a member of a Grammy-nominated rap-group "Digital Underground" and later on he released his first solo album "2Pacalypse Now", which included hit singles "Trapped" and "Brendas's Got A Baby".The Album drew some controversy when in 1992 "Trapped" was suggested as an inspiration to a cop-killing in Texas. Also in 1992 Tupac starred in his movie debut in Ernest Dickerson film "Juice". He played a troubled and violent young man "Bishop" and received some recognition in the media for his role. Controversy followed Tupac when there was a civil suit brought against him (which he was later accuitted of) for accidental shooting of a 6-year-old boy in Marion City.
Tupacs next album "Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z." was released in 1993 with hit singles "I Get Around"," Papa'z Song" and tribute to black women "Keep Ya Head Up". He also starred in John Singleton's movie "Poetic Justice" along with Janet Jackson. In 1993 American Music Awards Tupac was nominated for best new rap/hip-hop artist. But the year didn't pass without trouble for Tupac. In November two off-duty cops were shot in Atlanta and Tupac was arrested as a suspect. Shakur claimed self-defence and case was dropped due an insufficient evidence.
In 1994 rap-group "Thug Life"'s album "Volume 1&
quot; was released featuring Tupac. Tupac also appeared in a basketball movie called "Above the Rim". Controversy continued when Shakur was convicted to a 15 day jail sentence for assault (he'd been in fist fight with "Menace II Society" directors, The Hughes brothers in 1992) and in November Shakur faced sexual assault trial following late 1993 incident in New York where Shakur and his tour-manager allegedly raped a female fan.The Day before verdict was supposed to be delivered, Shakur was shot 5 times in a recording studio lobby. Shakur has later suggested that his old friend, east-coast rapper Biggie Smalls had set him up for Shakurs old enemies. Day after being shot Tupac was sentenced one-and-a-half to four-and-a-half years in prison. As Shakur was serving his sentence, his third solo album "Me Against The World" went no.1 in the Billboard charts and sold some 1.8 million copies. Album contained hits like "So Many Tears", "Temptations" and Grammy-nominated "Dear Mama".
After allmost eight months in jail, Shakur was released from prison on bail pending appeal by Death Row Records' C.E.O. Suge Knight. Soon after released on bail Shakur signed to Death Row and started working on his fourth album "All Eyez On Me". This double-cd debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's album chart and has sold over 5 million copies so far. As Shakur was shot in Vegas, "All Eyez On Me" was still on the charts and the single "How Do You Want It/California Love" was a top 20 single on Billboard. Death Row released Tupacs 5th album (under his alias "Makaveli") entitled "The Don Killuminati : The 7 Day Theory" on 5th of November and he also starred in three more movies before his passing ("Gang-related", "Gridlock'd" and "Bullet"). On 25th of October 1997, after legal battles between Death Row Records and Tupac's estate, Pac's 6t
h album "R U Still Down (Remember Me)" (double album) was released by Amaru Records. Though Tupac had his share of trouble, that's not what he was about. If you study his lyrics and interviews you'll see that there was much more to him than all that controversy shit in the media. In September the 13th 1996 a great talent was lost and will be missed by millions. Rest in peace Tupac !!!
