Advantages: Exciting, Fun, Energizing
Disadvantages: Deafening
She stood on the stage, bound to a big circle of metal, obviously terrified. I was only 16 years old and I sat riveted, watching her struggle against the cords at her wrists. Then they appeared amid smoke and lights. They were dressed in leather. They sneered. They snarled. It was 1978; the film was Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band and this was my introduction to Aerosmith. I had no idea who they were and didn't try to figure it out. It was just a scene from a movie and a memory that stuck in my mind. And, they were easily the only redeeming piece of that entire movie. Years later when I "officially" discovered the band and heard their version of Come Together, I realized that it was the same group I'd seen in the movie. Needless to say, I've been a fan of their music and Steven Tyler ever since. Even though I've followed the band for 25 years or so, I only just recently attended my first live show. Even though I still find Steve Tyler extremely sexy, I was a little concerned about seeing a band where the lead singer is the same age as my mother, but figured they still sound good so maybe they won't need walkers and canes to get around the stage. Boy was that an understatement. From the beginning of the concert, Tyler absolutely ruled the airwaves. He was able to hit every single high note that he tried. And, he didn't bring the octave donwn on any of the pieces. It was downright impressive. Energy-wise, none of the band members have lost a step and any brain cells that have received burials as a result from years of alcohol and drug abuse weren't missed. Tyler continued to do gymnastics on stage and Joe Perry, well, all I can say is WOW. I've heard that everyone in the band works out every day, something which is proven by their energy and bare chests. There were a couple telltale signs that they are advancing in years though, no matter how well they can still rock
. We were sitting to the side of the stage and high enough to notice that Steven Tyler has a bald spot. It probably gleamed a little extra brightly because of the spotlights on him, but I would have thought he'd have used that spray on hair for a concert. Additionally, we noticed that he used a teleprompter to help him remember the words to his songs. It would be one thing for the ones that are brand new, but for those that they've been singing 30 years, c'mon! The highlight of the evening was when they played my absolute favorite song. Well, I guess it's my favorite. Like all those top ten lists on dooyoo, it's hard to pin it down. I start thinking one is my favorite and then another pops into my head. Can I really say What It Takes is my favorite when Sweet Emotion is out there? And what about Dream On? Oh gosh, and we can't forget Walk This Way. Yes, in case you've noticed, while I love the new stuff too, my favorites are the older songs. Last weekend my husband and I spend an entire evening drinking wine and taking turns putting favorite songs on, songs we hadn't listened to in a long time. Included were Mama Kin and Train Kept A Rollin' (highly recommend you finding and listening to that one if you've never heard it). So, to Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Joey Kramer, Brad Whitford and Tom Hamilton, I say thanks for over 30 years of some of the greatest rock and roll on the airwaves and in concert. Thanks for cleaning up so we can enjoy you all the longer.

IainWear - 25.08.01 I also saw Aerosmith live for the first time recently (well, 1999!), and was greatly impressed. What a band! What an op! |
