... "Le Voyage de Penelope", or "Playground Love". "Mike Mills" is a case in point. On a first listen, it doesn't do a great deal. It starts out like an electronic-pastoral(?!) version of Pachelbel's Canon. But it is a grower. There's some delicious piano, and after several changes of instrumentation it ends up sounding more like an update of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, somehow. (But who'd name a short history of classical music after the bassist from REM, anyways?) Similarly, &q...more

Premium Review Air in general: TALKIE WALKIE - FIRST REVIEW OF NEW ALBUM (576 words)

Like most people, i first heard about Air when MOON SAFARI found its way onto every coffee table and every post-club chillout lounge in the land. It was a thing of mesmerizing beauty, alright..! But! having played that album to death, and despite being wowed by parts of the soundtrack to the VIRGIN SUICIDES, i was mystifyingly uninterested in 10,000HZ LEGEND, the follow-up album proper. Which brings us, by way of an "ooh!", a "hmmm??" and a "so what", to Air's latest offering, TALKIE WALKIE. 1) Good title. This should be an event. French Band Air is one of those acts that regularly attract great expectations. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Who needs Oxygen when we has AIR! (1570 words)

Monday 29th October ‘Air’ came to Glasgow! Nope, some brilliant entrepreneur did not take a huge hoover and vacuum the smog and grime up, super glue the ozone layer and save our souls – wouldn’t it be nice! However, something equally as fab :s did happen: one of the most genius acts of our time came to the Barrowlands, and created harmony in my fast and furious and generally unappreciated world! ‘Air’, as a band, mean something to me. They remind me of a beautiful time where I rediscovered a lot of me. And they represent a moment in that time that never fails to be beautiful. When I hear their music I float into that ...  Read the complete review

Air ! Its great ! I love it and use it everyday ! Here are (for me) its main uses, Breathing: This is the most popular use of 'air', I normally do this without thinking about it (if I do think about, I would forget my breathing pattern and hyperventilate) Air goes in, adds oxygen to my blood, I exhale carbon dioxide ! Plants then breathe the carbon dioxide and produce oxygen ! Fantastic ! Inflating things: If you have read my opinion on "things to take on holiday" you will know that I hate inflatables (great big dolphins, rubber rings, special doll of open mouthed lady) But there are other things that you can ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Air are Post-House?  (228 words)

What matters is the aesthetics behind their music: without any snobbery or intellectual monotomy, they can say that classical music is a major influence eg Debussy, Rachmaninov, Stravinsky,...A sad fact about music today is that many of us feel alienated from classical music. There are variety of reasons for this - one being that it is a middle class preserve and that it is guarded as a superior music when listened to as a whole. But as Air advocate and practice, melody is all encompassing. For them, ideas of beauty equate with melody. I have read somewhere that Air evoked a romantic tradition of melancholy and nostalgia that goes back to Debussy. But I think ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Air in general: The Air Website (179 words)

The official Air web-site has the style and ambience of their music. Covering everything from the pre Priemiere Symptomes era to the Virgin Suicides soundtrack and their documentry 'Eating, Sleeping and Playing' it has a wealth of information for you to digest. As well as the latest news, a short biography tells of how they came into being and analyses the Air philosophy of making music and there are several short 'web safaris' covering the Moon Safari period. What makes it really worth a visit though is the audio/video sections. Most of the Air back cataologue can be heard in real audio, including several raraties and collaborations whilst ...  Read the complete review
