What matters is the aesthetics behind their music: without any snobbery or intellectual monotomy, they can say that classical music is a major influence eg Debussy, Rachmaninov, Stravinsky,...A sad fact about music today is that many of us feel alienated from classical music. There are variety of reasons for this - one being that it is a middle class preserve and that it is guarded as a superior music when listened to as a whole. But as Air advocate and practice, melody is all encompassing. For them, ideas of beauty equate with melody.

I have read somewhere that Air evoked a romantic tradition of melancholy and nostalgia that goes back to Debussy. But I think that they are more than that. For all classic learnings, they are Easy Listening. Midnight Cowboy could be theirs definetely! Yet threads of Jazz, Psychedelia, and 70's Disco shine through.

I don't think that they fit into any modern musical category, though regardless they are pigeon-holed.They make great music with flowery ambiguous themes. In other words, they are not afraid to experiment. I would rate as their contemporaries Radiohead, Spiritualized, Kid Loco, Supergrass. They would cite themselves Beck, Beastie Boys, Daft Punk, Etienne de Crécy.

Who are we listening from 100 years ago?Air are listening to plenty...yet they have forged a modern sound.
