... classic brassy Broadway at all. "Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals are loved by the masses... It is pap on a plate served up for general public to sup on.", so says pjs21, who goes on to recommend Sondheim to ALW fans who haven't seen the light. Great article but I beg to differ. Comparing Sondheim and Lloyd Webber is like comparing apples and oranges-- the difference is not neccessarily in terms of quality, but in terms of w...more

And for that matter, does "popular" neccessarily mean artistically impoverished? Important questions, because these words are habitually used to describe Andrew Lloyd Webber. Along with "derivative", "emotionally manipulative" etc. Although "overrated" wouldn't be an altogether accurate word to describe him-- we all know what about 70% of the critics think of his oeuvre! Of course there was Jack Tinker but then he's dead... Oh, but then the public adores him. Or do they really? Okay, here we go. For those who have read my opinion of Stephen Sondheim you will know my feelings towards Mr Webber. For those who may well have read my opinion on The Phantom of The Opera, you too will know my feelings towards Andy W. For those of you who haven't read either of these, you are yet to learn my feelings of Mr Webber. Andrew Lloyd Webber was destined to be one of the countries most respected composers after having his first piece of music published at the age of 9. By the age of 40 he had written seven major musicals, most of which had his name in lights on both sides of the Atlantic. He was the first British composer to ...  Read the complete review

There have been great composers throughout history, Beethoven, Bach, Brahm, and that’s just the B’s. However, when I think of great composers, one name always comes to mind. Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, composing such musicals as Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar. That list alone would make him great. However, his credits also include writing, producing, directing and also acting. The man is a legend in his time. Born March 22, 1948, in South Kensington, England. His parents were both into music. His father was a professor of theory and composition at the Royal College of Music in England. ...  Read the complete review
