Advantages: nothing like the chemistry between a band and a smaller audience, ability to give bands a chance
Disadvantages: artists taking advantage of their fans, lip syncing scam
£85 for a singer is way more than I could every imagine paying for any single gig. It would cost you that for a weekend at one of the summers fests where you could choose from dozens of the best bands around. I suppose atleast Madonna is (I would hope) singing live. How people can shell out loads of money for lip syncing 'bands' is beyond me. It is just dancers mouthing to the same album you have at home. The best thing I ever discovered in relation to concerts is the joy of the small shows. I grew up in the States near a large city and pretty much every gig I went to was a huge stadium tour. They were fun and costly but I didn't know any better. Then I went to Uni in Boston ,USA and went to see the Presidents Of The United States Of America in a very small club. Couldn't have been more than 500 of us there and it only cost me 10 dollars. I never knew live music could be so good. In the huge stadium gigs I never felt the chemistry that happens between a band and the audience. At this show we were close enough to look the band in the eye. That makes a huge difference. Ever since then I have only been to one gig with an audience over 5,000. That was to see REM at Earls Court ( same place Madonna is playing..its a crap venue). They are my fave band so I was willing to do it and it was the most costly at around £40. I could have seen the twice for what it is costing to see Madonna and still have money left over for a one day travel card. Last week I saw Wheatus. I didn't know much about them other than a few listens to their album and wasn't sure if I would really like them. It turned out to be one of the best gigs I have ever been to. The tickets only cost me £12. If the ticket had been higher I wouldn't have been able to just give the band a chance. I have a friend who went to Madonna and was in the 9th row. She really enjoyed it but the next day she went to see the return of the ol
d band Living Colour. She was stunned by how much more she liked the smaller ( about 100 people) Living Colour gig. I understand if some is you fave you 'need' to see them but open your eyes and see that they are taking the piss out of you by demanding such high fees and creating false demand. Did you honestly think that Madonna didn't know she was going to sell out and need extra shows? She isn't a stupid woman and it was amazing how quickly she picked extra shows out of her hat. Try out the smaller shows..you will never look back and in a place like Brixton Acadamey there isn't a bad seat in the house!
