Advantages: Obvious

Disadvantages: Damaging to artists AND listeners

Initially I had no objections to Napster. I didn't fathom that it could replace the CD because 1) not all songs from an album except the biggest hits are necessrily available on Napster and 2) I had a slow internet connection and was restricted as to how many songs I could feasibly download.

However, I now view Napster differently. I got an ADSL connection and I positively rinsed out the system, downloading hundreds of songs which I had longed to hear. I even downloaded favourite TV show theme tunes from my childhood, once my desire for popular music had been fulfilled.

I would have bought some of those albums however!

Therefore some artists have been cheated out of what is rightfully theres, undisputably. Not only this, but I have been cheated in a way because I have denied myself the opportunity to widen my listning experience of those artists by limiting myself to downloading only their biggest hits.

There is much to be said for Napster, but without the permission of the artists it is nothing short of net piracy which doesn't do any of us any favours in the long run.

Can I ask a question?

Do you own a audio cassette recorder or even a video recorder?

I' ll take a guess that the answer is yes.
OK, so please explain the difference?
While your thinking about that, let me raise a few points.

1. Does the price of CD's in this country not p**s you off, by buying from abroad or online £'s can be saved on the average UK high street price.

2. By downloading tracks using Napster you can preview songs you would never get to hear without buying the album on CD. Your statement that only hit records are available on the Napster server's is not correct, try searching using only an artist name or if you know it the album title.
It's even possible to get rare tracks, if you don't know how ask, i'm always pleased to help anyone.

3. This is my most important point. You shot yourself in the foot here i'm afraid. In your opinion you state that, if you had not downloaded the tracks from napster then you may of bought the CD's. Later however you have admitted to only buying one CD a month.

Sorry to bitch, but in my opinion Napster provides a great service to all us music lover's and let's be honest, most PC owner's ,including myself, don't own a CD recorder so unless you go down the expensive route of portable MP3 player's you're only ever going to listen to the downloaded tracks on your PC.
