Advantages: Albums recorded as individual tracks
Disadvantages: Irritating users who can ban you for not obeying "their rules", some users do not share files
Since transferring from a rival Peer to peer ( person to person) program I decided to give this one a try, It is called Soulseek and it is a program that allows you to share and download files from other users, aswell as chat to them in private messages and in chat rooms. The program itself contains a search directory and allows you to browse other members files with some users having their albums contained in folders which is very handy for downloading as all the songs are in one folder. Not only this, sometimes you will find the covers and labels for the album you wish to download. One downside of this peer to peer program is there can be queues when you are downloading but if you speak nicely to the person you wish to download from they may add you to their list and this prioritises you for downloading their files. You are also able to select how many users may upload from you at a time and you are also able to set an appropriate bandwith for those who wish to download from you which is very handy as you can then select the bandwidth you require for downloading files for yourself. Some users on this program request that you do NOT download more than one album at a time and if you do, you may find yourself banned from downloading from them so bear in mind to check their info before downloading to save any hassle. The one advantage that sticks out in my mind about Soulseek compared to Kazaa is that when you download an album from Soulseek the files are actually split into individual tracks as opposed to Kazaa where you find the whole album is recorded as 1 single track meaning you would have to edit it. Virus wise I must confess I havent come accross any on this program and when using Kazaa I was constantly warned about downloading virus' from other users so again this is a massive thumbs up to Soulseek. It also claims to be spyware free and ad free For those who are interested in joining Soulseek the of
ficial website can be found at http://www.slsk.org/ As for my views on Music Piracy I dont actually see it as commiting a crime as such by downloading music. I am not the person selling the goods on to make money, they are for my own personal use. Also being unemployed and having to live on a measly £100 a fortnight is a very good reason for downloading music. If I added up the amount of money I could have spent on some of the things I have downloaded I'd probably have spent around £3K so far! especially as I have some of the latest Films that are just out at the cinema, even 8 Mile!. So in that respect I think its great as paying £16+ for a DVD is still a little pricey.
