Augustus Pablo (1954-99) is a reggae legend famous for his revolutionary use of the melodica, an instrument usually considered a children's plaything. It's basically a handheld keyboard you blow into and, in the hands of Pablo (real name Horace Swaby), it takes on a laid-back, mystical feel known initially as the 'far East' sound. His early 70s hits such as 'Java' and 'East of the River Nile' extended reggae's palette and made him much in demand as a session musician.
