... release 'Cosmic Thing' that really launched the band in the UK, thanks to a little ditty about a funky little shack... The opening track, also called 'Cosmic Thing' is a perfect introduction to the band. The shouted lyrics from the distinctive Fred Schnei der (a man who looks like the bastard offspring of Kenneth Williams and 'Who's Line Is It Anyway's Ryan Stiles) complement the honeyed vocals of the beehived voc...more

**This review is about the album 'Cosmic Thing' rather than the band in general due to there being no category for it yet. I'll try and get it moved at a later date...** The B-52s are one of those bands who are very difficult to define in terms of musical genres. Kooky, eccentric and at times disconcertingly bizarre, the band managed to carve out a unique identity for themselves with a series of off the wall and original hits throughout the late 70's, 80's and early 90's. I have been a fan of the B-52's for over ten years now and have three of their albums. However I am not going to write about the group itself but focus on what I believe to be their greatest album, Cosmic Thing. The group has a generally very uplifting and unusual sound to them, "Love Shack" being their most successful track is quite representative of this The tempo of their tracks is generally quick with the very different vocal styles of Fred Schneider acting as a counterpoint for the female vocalists, Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson. Kate is probably the most well known member of the group having appeared on the REM track "Shiny ...  Read the complete review

THE B52s The B52s came from Athens, Georgia. They were one of the first post-punk bands to come out and use irony successfully in their lyrics. Both girl members of the band always looked fabulous. Decked out in their beehive hairdos, jerkily dancing and singing to such classics (to me anyway) as PLANET CLAIRE, DANCE THIS MESS AROUND and ROCK LOBSTER. The album “THE B52s”, released in 1979 on the Island label, is one of my favourites. It's a shame they didn't last. But they were good while they did. ...  Read the complete review
