Advantages: Earn money, make people cry, have a good time!
Disadvantages: You need some puff!
I have played the bagpipes since I was 8 years old, 14 years ago. Back then, I was being forced through piano lessons by my parents, in order to turn me into the musical genious of the family. I HATED THE PIANO LESSONS! 'Well if you don't like it, you'll have to pick something else to learn', my Mum said.
'Bagpipes.'
And it went from there! They thought it would be hard to find a tutor in England, but a few weeks later we spotted a juvenile band playing in my hometown, perfect!
I got my chanter, bashed away at the scale, learnt the gracenotes, learnt dublins. I had a teacher called Fred, an old bloke, who was so amazing I named my hamster after him. After no time I was onto my first tune - Loch Marie.
Then my first set of pipes, then drone by drone, I could play my first set of pipes. It took A VERY LONG TIME!
I was the richest teenager after new year.. came out with hundreds and hundreds every time. I had great summers away at competitions. I got too old to be a juvenile and joined the senior band. That was my favourite band I had loads of fun, but I went away to uni, and when I came back, after 3 long years, madness had gone on and the band were barely there any more.
So I joined a new band and I'm ready for another year of pipe mania!!
I would recommend learning to anybody, as long as you have time to learn, its not quick and its not easy, and you need a lot of patience. Once you have learnt, you'll never look back, and you'll have it for life!
Summary: Learning pipes is well worth it.
