The Beatles……..What about those Haircuts!! I remember well the rise of The Beatles in the sixties. I was still at primary school when the four Liverpool lads hit the charts with “She loves you Yeah, Yeah,Yeah”. I hated that damn song and never really took to these four guys who were taking the pop world by storm with their new image of smart suits and that Beatle haircut. And those Beatle boots they wore, I remember wearing a pair to school with the long toe, looking back they were a terrible style. The next hit “ Twist and Shout” also hit the top spot and The Beatles were well and truly on their way to fame and fortune. In our local Woolworth’s that Xmas they were actually selling plastic Beatle wigs, I kid you not..Another thing that started about the same time was the bubblegum cards. That was a set of 3 cards containing pictures of The Beatles as well as a stick of bubblegum. I still recall my sense of achievement when I collected all 100 of them.. Anyway who were The Beatles..You had the two main song writers, the famous Lennon/McCartney double, John Lennon and Paul McCartney. After that you had the drummer Ringo Starr and of course George Harrison. The Beatles had hit after hit but for me they didn’t turn the corner to fame or gain my respect fully until that fantastic album was released, none other than “Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts”. What an album that was to be, it was just so different for that time. The best track it contained was “ A day in the life”, but it was just such a great album…as of course was Revolver and Abbey Road… The thing about The Beatles at the time was the fact that they were so different, I think they must have been the first band to attract the following of screaming young girls, a trend that was to follow with each male band after that. Favourite Beatles song for me has to be “Strawbe
rry Fields”, this song had everything in it, great tune plus great lyrics. It was about this time that my love for The Beatles songs began to take off. I wasn’t really that keen on the early stuff they had out but songs like “Strawberry Fields” and “Fool on the Hill” were songs that I liked. There were many great songs like “Yesterday” which believe it or not, McCartney wrote in the back of a taxi, talent or what..There are so many great songs to name but my guess is everyone has one that they like more, for some reason or another.. When they released their two double hits albums, the double Red being the early stuff and the double Blue being the later stuff I found myself just buying the Blue Album..If you have never heard this double collection you should buy it as it is ten times better than that No.1 album they released before Xmas which in my opinion contained a poor collection. They were to go on to make a few movies much in the same theme as the Elvis movies. I enjoyed the movie “ Help” but wasn’t to keen on “ A Hard Days Night”. The movies made them even more famous and when the 4 lads flew out to America they were received with open arms.It was in America of course where John Lennon made his famous “ The Beatles are more famous than God” speech. As you can imagine this went down like a lead balloon but like life today the bad publicity only fueled further interest in the group… Like most walks of life petty jealousies were to creep into the band, plus the band members were to get married and I suppose they just got fed up with each other. Many people blamed Yoko for the breakup, personally I think they would have split anyway as they had hit their peak and to be honest there was nothing else left for them to do. All the same when the news of their breakup was announced, like a lot of people I was saddened. The magic of that Lennon/ Mc
Cartney period had drawn to a close and to this day it has never been bettered.. A sadder day was the day in New York when John Lennon was gunned down. I will never forget hearing that on the radio, I had always hoped that The Beatles would get together for one concert and there had been talk of it happening but now sadly it was not to be. In my eyes John Lennon was the Beatles and he still is even today one of the great songwriters ever…if not the greatest! In a poll taken less than a year ago John Lennon’s single “Imagine” was voted the number one single of all time and in an album poll of the same theme the album “Revolver” was at number one..So even after all these years The Beatles and the genius that was John Lennon still shine through… To conclude I take my hat off to four working class guys from Liverpool who got together to make music and ended up world stars. Paul McCartney was to find further success with his group Wings, Ringo was to have a few hit singles and George was to make a few singles himself including that great number one “My Sweet Lord”…. It’s just sad that John Lennon was mudered because I still think he had many more great songs in him, great songs like “Imagine and Woman”. Anyway thank you yet again for the read and take care, your friend online……… Art…….10th Sept 2001……………This has to be dedicated to John Lennon……

- 21/09/01 Lovely op. I'm an 'Abbey Road' fan, I think, but love the white album, too. And their history - starting out as a skiffle band, then rockers in Hamburg. Interesting people, all of them, regardless, if not sometimes because of, their roots. Lovely op, anyway:) |
