Bee Gees…….I Prefer The Gee Gees……..
I was just a kid when I first heard the brothers’ Gibb, it was the late sixties and Britain was in flower power mode, those days when it was cool to wear flowers in your hair. When the summers were long and hot and life was just so easy. I personally was a bit young for all that and my hair was just short, back and sides…..
It was then I first heard them sing “Massachusetts”, not an easy word to spell may I add, but the song just blew me away. That unique sound of their voices that was to make hit after hit. The sort of voice you could only hope to achieve by wearing your pants extremely tight!!
So the Bee Gees consist of three brothers being, Maurice, Robin and Barry. Robin was married to the lovely Lulu for a while but it just didn’t last. Robin is the brother that is into wearing a hat all the time. Lulu was a lovely girl whom I really fancied at the time. I think it was the mini skirt that did it, although she was older than me and these days I prefer my women younger, redheaded and intellectual with a witty sense of fun!……..
They are best remembered for the music from the film “ Saturday night Fever”, a cracking film starring John Travolta and that white suit. That cracking song Night Fever along with Jive Talking and Tragedy made the film a classic with the ladies. Travolta stripping down to his short black pants had nothing to do with it, or did it ladies??..
Personally I preferred their older songs like the one Ronan Keating destroyed, “ Words”. Now if you have heard the Bee Gees sing Words and then listen to Ronan sing it you will see what I mean. If you are a big Ronan fan then I apologise …. For your lack of musical taste!!!!!!……
I also liked the song “ Tragedy” which sort of revived the group from a period when they had all but vanished
from the music scene. Of course the ever lovely Steps took that song and their version bettered the Bee Gees one. Or was I just influenced by the lovely Lisa, what a tragedy that Steps split up. I was so upset by the breakup it took a month of intensive counseling for me to get over it. ……
My two favourite Bee Gees songs are “Run to Me” and “First of May”. I love the lyrics in First of May, the verse “When I was small Christmas Trees were tall” but “Now we are tall and Christmas Trees are small” but “You and I our love will never die”. I have to admit that behind the old fool called Art1954 there is a bit of a romantic and I love songs with good lyrics. One of my all time favourite songs is “Stand by me” by the Pretenders, outstanding lyrics!……
They have managed to make hit after hit for over 30 years now and they are a big part of British music. They are listened to by both young and old and I would guess that most people in Britain have heard of The Bee Gees….
To finish I will give my opinion on them. I wouldn’t go out and buy one of their albums and I certainly wouldn’t watch them in concert. On the plus side I can name over a dozen of their songs that I love and I think they have been an inspiration to a lot of other bands and singers as proven by the number of their songs that others have sung……..
Anyway thank you for your read, take care, sitting here in work typing on a freezing day in Belfast just waiting on snow to fall, as ever your friend online……
