Billie Piper hit our ears with her debut song ‘Because We Want To’ at the tender age of 15 after being spotted by Innocent Records and Virgin modelling in Smash Hits. The tune went straight to number one obviously very popular with the teenybopper generation. She insisted that studying was her top priority although I have heard that she has only sat 3 GCSE’s. Never the less she continued to storm the chats with sweet, innocent hits such as ‘Girlfriend’ and ‘Honey To The Bee’. Her first album entitled Honey To The B was a success with Billie co-writing one song on it but this LP soon tumbled down the charts as time went by, as people wanted a more mature sound.

She soon began to date 5ive (boy band) star Richard Neville, this caused an uproar with 5ive fans and Billie was soon the target of an all out hate campaign staged by 5ive fans. She constantly got booed off stage and called names such as ‘bitch’. The whole of 5ive had to have a conference to address fans as things started to get violent towards Billie and generally out of control.

Intelligently Billie dumped Rich, although maybe over the phone was not the best way of breaking up with someone. Billie then had the misfortune of having a stalker who wanted to kill her because she had apparently given her (the stalker) a dirty look at a party. This was a tough time for Billie with several court appearances taking place. (I have had three stalkers, it’s very painful) She also looked very weary from the pictures that I remember of her from that period. Sensibly Billie took a year off from her music career.

During this year though she complied a new album co-writing with people such as Ellot Kennedy, Wendy Page, Tim Lever and Jim Marr. She also changed her image from the sweet girl next door to the sexy and seductive woman. She also acquired fashion sense and had never looked better. She also decided to include her second name P
iper on her records obviously to sound more mature, a thing that I think she should have done from the beginning. The Billie logo was also changed, from cheesy pink with a crown on top of the B to white arial writing. She had a more mature sound to her music such as the Britney wannabe Day and Night to the more soulful Something Deep Inside and Walk Of Life. People say that she was trying to copy Britney Spears who was the original; although I have to disagree Billie was here before Britney and took time out due to personal problems that I personally can relate to.

Her new single Day and Night went straight in at no 1 showing that Billie was not just a one hit wonder. Her next single also took the same route but her third single flopped coming in at only 28 in the charts which was a shame because it in my opinion is the best song out of the three. Her record company, Innocent told her that unless her fourth single went in at no 1 she would be dropped from their label. In my opinion this was slightly harsh but none the less Billie decided to take a year out to make a new album but after a year and barely half of the album finished she was dropped from Innocent Records.

It was around this time that she started to date the aging, alcoholic Virgin Radio DJ Chris Evans. Whose daughter is just two years younger than Billie. Nevertheless she continued to date him and I respect Billie for sticking it out despite the media knifing her for pulling such a ‘publicity stunt’ considering how her music career was failing. Noone could believe that this young 18 year old could want to date Chris Evans (ginger, white skinned, pot bellied, glasses wearing dad).

Suddenly one day the couple decided to fly out and get married in Las Vegas at a secret ceremony. They married in summer shirts adorned in flowers and wearing flip-flops. Yet again Billie was slaughted in the media and has been slagged off by such newspapers as The Sun and The Daily Mir
ror ever since. I for one greatly respect this girl for not bowing to the media and doing what she wants to do, I wish that many celebrities would do what they want to do and not follow the media and peer pressure to be anything else but themselves.

Chris never got over his alcohol problem and kept not turning up to work or turning up late and drunk. Virgin Radio repeated to give him warnings about his behaviour but Chris in the end decided to quit just as Virgin were about to fire him, they sacked Chris despite the fact that he had already quit and said that they and Chris had decided to end his contract on equal terms.

Chris being a millionaire and worth £40 million decided to take himself and Billie on an extended honeymoon for a year all over the world. Several pictures were taken of them continually drinking and eating as Billie had obvious started to put on the pounds she had also loss that dress sense which her new image had flaunted.

Chris and Billie came off their seriously extended honeymoon and Chris brought Billie a red sports car for her birthday, the only problem being Billie couldn’t drive. I’m sure that tiny problem is now sorted out. They are still married and by all accounts are happily married.
Billie has said that she is now going to be making a new album and that ‘fans and the media will be pleasantly surprised’. Billie has recently had a cameo role alongside Orlando Bloom in The Calcium Kid where he plays a milkman that becomes a world famous boxer because his bones are so strong I’m guessing that must be from the milk eh ;).

All in all I like Billie, I like her because she is different from all the other pop stars of our generation. She has kept down to earth and has not changed much in terms of appearance and attitude. She has kept true to herself and I think that is the best role model that teenage girls can have. Her career and life has flaws in it but what life does
n’t. Instead of trying to be someone she isn’t…. like a virgin. She’s showing everybody the truth. She didn’t lie or try to hide the fact that she was dating Chris Evans and didn’t flaunt that fact either despite him being a multi-millionaire. She hasn’t had a polished life, she has had hard times and I feel that I can relate to her or at least understand some of the things that she has been through. I have her second album and several of the first album songs and I like them. They might not be the best songs I have heard but they are enjoyable and most of all they are British.
