Face to Face 1998. Growing up, one of my favourite singers was Billy Joel. Billy Joel is a talented singer/songwriter but he has a style of his own. In my opinion Billy Joel's music is so creative. His songs are more like storytelling, rather than a box standard song . In a sense he is a true artistic, as he paints a picture in his songs. I remember one Christmas there was a recording of one of his concerts in America and I thought WOW! Even as a television programme, he seemed to have such a stage presence. Not only that, but some of his songs used unusual "instruments", in order to perfect the song. (By that I mean things like lead piping etc.) ........ I remember thinking "I would love to see him live one day, but what's the chance he would ever tour in Scotland.".................. Many years later (Probably about 12), my dream came true.... It was announced that Billy Joel was going to be touring with Elton John, in a tour called face to face. That was just the best news I could have had. Not only was it one of my greatest wishes to see Billy Joel, but my sister was a BIG fan of Elton and had always wanted to see a live show............ And just incase I felt I needed an excuse to justify going (which I didn't) I was getting married in about 12 weeks time and had been thinking that my sister & I should spoil ourselves before my big day. Here was the PERFECT way to do that. So on the 2nd of June 1998 we went to see Elton John & Billy Joel live at Ibrox Stadium......... We had opted for the for seated tickets, which meant we were quite a distance from the stage but we didn't really mind that. Infact we were relieved that we did because it was a freezing, rainy day (despite it being June) and at least we had some shelter (unlike those standing on the Pitch area). Elton John and Billy Joel put on a superb show. Both men are incredibly talented pianists and superb showmen.
(And to tell you the truth, they were so stunning, I can't even remember if there was a support act or who they were.) Billy Joel and Elton John each took turns to sing their own songs, then there was a time where they dueted together with each others songs. As well as that they had agreed to have a time where they sang each others songs (the ones that the writer did not want to sing themselves.) It was fabulous. Just like the programme I had seen years before, the show was creative, energetic and vibrant. If I was to sum up what I thought I would say that it was a fabulous display of talented musicians, who know how to capture their audience. (I feel tremendously lucky that I got to see my favourite singer in a live concert because the next day it was announced that the tour had been suspended due to Billy Joel falling ill.) To my mind Billy Joel is one of a select group of people who has the ability to give an all round performance. He sings, writes, plays....... and does it all in a creative way. This gives it a dynamic that makes him a cut above the rest.
