Advantages: A very real band who plays real songs, withstood the test of time against all odds, still alive and kicking, with their future very bright
Disadvantages: No real huge album after Slippery When Wet, too many ballads and not enough of their hard rock in recent years
I find it a crime that VH1 puts Bon Jovi only at 78 on their list of 100 Greatest Hard Rock Artists of all time. They've come out on top of the hair band era, survived the grunge era, and to this day is one of the greatest rock bands that still play. For the music fans clueless about Bon Jovi, these are the albums they released in this order: Bon Jovi 7800 degrees Farenheit Slippery When Wet New Jersey Keep the Faith Crossroads (compilation album) These Days Crush One Wild Night Live: 1985-2001 (compilation album) Bon Jovi currently consists of singer Jon Bon Jovi, guitarist Richie Sambora, drummer Tico Torres, and those other people I forgot about (Some Jovi fan I am). To me, the thing that makes Bon Jovi worth listening to is that they're not like all rock bands, they don't scream their lungs out with lyrics like "KILL YOUR MOM KILL YOUR MOM" or are too heavy to listen to, they're just right. They make inspiration lyrics that have touched millions around the world. "She says we gotta hold on to what we've got, it doesn't make a difference if we make it or not. We've got each other, that's a lot for love" - Livin' on a Prayer They sing about virtually everything, love, faith, courage. Lyrics to enhance music a lot and Bon Jovi has that. Jon Bon Jovi is as good of a singer I have ever seen and Richie Sambora is widely considered one of the best guitarists of all time. 'Runaway' was their first hit on their debut album, and then next came 7800 Degrees Farenheit. Both were only moderately successful albums and only gave them opening acts. Until Slippery When Wet. Off Slippery When Wet were the singles 'You Give Love a Bad Name', 'Livin' on a Prayer', and 'Wanted Dead or Alive'. They became the biggest band in the world during this period, selling records at a blinding pace. They followed i
t with New Jersey, which featured 'Lay Your Hands on Me' and 'Bad Medicine'. While not as successful as Slippery When Wet, it continued Bon Jovi's push for greater achievement. Then, Nirvana ushered in the grunge era, and Bon Jovi seemed all but dead. Keep the Faith was released, and it proved Bon Jovi could weather any storm and still be successful. Following it was their greatest hits collection of their first five albums named Crossroads, which also featured the single 'Always' which became a smash hit. For several years the tension between the band had become very tight, and it took a while for them to get back in the studio to record These Days in 1995. It was a huge success in the UK but not so much in the USA. The band got back to their normal lives without being a part of the music industry, until they the new millenium... Crush. While not as big as one of their older albums, it confirmed Bon Jovi's status as true warriors, being one of the few among the likes of Aerosmith and U2 to still survive. Crush featured the hugely succesful single 'It's My Life' and was nominated for two Grammy's. What's up ahead for Bon Jovi? Their eigth studio album Bounce is headed for stores early October. Between then, they'll be front and center of a huge celebration to kick off the NFL season in both Times Square and the Giants' game. Will Bounce get Bon Jovi back up to Slippery When Wet status? Time will tell. This is one of the greatest bands ever assembled. We see so many great bands that go for only 2 years and break up, this is not the case with Bon Jovi. For the Jersey boys, success has not gotten to their minds. They are very real people who write very real songs, and it'll keep that way. Rock on boys.

- 20/08/02 That's a nice opinion. Bounce will be out on the 23rd September in the UK though. And I don't know why you backed down over AC/DC there! LOL Have they sold 93 million albums Worldwide? Are you going to see BJ at the Capital FM concert on Sept 7th? |

- 06/08/02 I give thumbs up to Def Leppard. They've just released a new album and it's fairly decent compared to their older ones.
However, Iron Maiden and AC/DC are dead. I'm no expert on those two bands, but I believe their lifespan isn't much different from Bon Jovi. You must recall they played during the heyday of rock and roll. Bon Jovi played during the late stages of of the hair band era, and thrived. Did Iron Maiden and AC/DC survive such an obstacle as the Grunge era in which they would have been run over and stomped on by Nirvana and Pearl Jam? No.
Then in the year 2000, 'It's My Life' cracked a chart full of N'Sync, BSB, and other pop acts and increasingly low on rock. Slap AC/DC and Iron Maiden in this era and they wouldn't fare well at all. This is why to me Bon Jovi is the better SURVIVOR band, they're so versatile.
There is no question AC/DC is the bigger band than Bon Jovi, Iron Maiden is pretty close though. But what you're saying here is longevity, and Bon Jovi is what it's all about. |
