The main problem that I have with the current crop of Boy/girl bands is that they never ever pick up an instrument. Even the Monkees, who were arguably the first manufactured group, could play their own instruments even if they were rarely allowed to. Davy Jones was often shown playing a tambourine ; a skill which seems to escape A1, Westlife, Boyzone etc etc. They are not "bands" either. They are a group of dancers with a token singer thrown in. Has *anyone* actually heard the males in Steps sing a note? What purpose do they serve except to look pretty - answers on a postcard please. When I think back to the flack that bands like Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet took in the early 1980's for being "pretty boys", its just laughable. Compared to Boyzone, Duran Duran were Oasis! I'm surprised that the teens of today have not already gotten sickened by the manufactured image of pop. Everyone is so sanitised and prettied up that the "rebellion" angle which was always so prevalent has been washed away with the soapsuds. Pop Music should always be about "rebellion". Music that teens like should not be liked by their grandparents or your parents, its all part of growing up. Where is the rebellion in listening to Ronan Keating murder another ballad? I wish the time had come to do away with Boy/Girl bands. We need something from the streets, something down and dirty. Something that will wash away this drivel that is called Pop music. Something organic like Punk. Unfortunately I can't see anything happening for a long time yet. If you don't like Boy Bands, there isn't much else in the charts, unless you like the awful warbling of the so-called "Soul" singers. Bring back Aretha Franklin!!
