OK, yes, Smerin is about to get judgemental... For this lovely comment by me, I have looked the definition of 'band' in the dictionary.
BAND (music): A group of players who perform as an ensemble, a group of musicians who play music other than classical music Example: a rock band.
Hmmmm, me thinks that this means that you have to play an instrument.
Boy/girl bands don't play thier own instruments, don't sing their own songs, don't write their own songs, they mime and are usually made by other people who are after money, and so pick the members by 'looks' alone.
Personally I don't understand how 'pop' bands are so successful. 'Pop' stands for popular, but why are they so?
If you wanted to listen to a 'band' you would listen for the talent of good lyrics (and it would be nice to hear some lyrics about something other than love, or thongs please), you would listen to the talent of the instruments, and how they are played.
Personally I think that girl/boy bands are just a group of manufactured pretty people who are good at miming and good at earning money.
What is the world of music coming to? We used to have proper bands and solo artists, and nothing else, who did sing live, like David Bowie, The Beatles, Queen. Now we have bands coming out of our earlobes like N-Sync and Girl Thing, who don't even understand how to use singular and plural words (WE are the last ONE standing).
Proper bands don't even get a look in, when there is true talent behind their tunes and lyrics.
I am just glad that a few real 'bands' are still getting into the charts like Blink 182 or JJ72. I'm amazed that the teenie-boppers even bounced to their songs on Top of the Pops, they don't even know what a bass is.
