Advantages: can give good songs

Disadvantages: Plagaristic, Biased, Talentless

As I previously predicted, I got a lot of mixed reception earlier regarding this op, so I’m going to update it in the hope that my argument will not get beaten about my head again…

Okay this is an argument that I positively LOVE! So here we go…I expect to receive a mixed reception because of this but who gives a rip? I’m going to speak my mind and to hell with the consequences.

First off, I’m not against all Boybands/Girlbands, what I am against though is the concept of a manufactured band…I absolutely LOATHE the idea! Okay fair enough, this method of giving us superstars has performed quite well in the past, examples being ‘Take That’, ‘Boyzone’ and more recently ‘Westlife’, but still I’m not convinced. Recent shows such as ‘Pop stars’ absolutely sicken me…what I don’t see is talent, what is see is a bunch of posers with a little bit of singing talent, who are too bloody lazy to try and make it the honest way by forming a band or singing gigs. It actually really angers me to know that there is an awful lot of REAL talent out there who are trying hard to make it the hard way, but unfortunately may not be what is considered as ‘attractive’ enough or ‘fashionable’ enough to get a look in! What sickens me even more is the fact that most of today’s ‘talent’ in the pop world’s attitude to themselves. Claiming to have these ‘heroes’ of music, and trying to explain the deep and true meaning of songs that they didn’t even write, give me a bloody break!

Take a look at stars such as Britney Spears for example, okay; I admit she has a great voice but then take a look at her previous career. Hmmmmm, somebody say ‘set-up’? She was previously a child-model, a television presenter for Disney (along with her boyfriend Justin Timberlake – even more surprising) and then all
of a sudden chooses singing. The only reason she did so was that her other options were drying up and she had to save herself. Fair enough she has done well – but I was watching a television interview with her the other night and there she was, discussing the ‘real’ meaning of ‘her’ songs – listen Britney, write your own first and I’ll believe you, okay?

The only reason that all these ’singers’ are making it big is due to looks and nothing more. Lets take the recent creation of ‘Hearsay’…most of them were okay at singing – the girls in particular, but have you ever heard them live? – Jesus, they are TERRIBLE! Danny sounds like somebody just stood on a bloody cat for crying out loud!
And what exactly is the craic with singing live? Are these great singers not capable of it? They seem to sound great on a digitally tweaked album, but when on a stage do they catch some disease that requires them to mime? I absolutely hate miming, if you can sing in the first place, then nothing should stop you from doing so all the time (Bar colds, etc).

I believe that flooding the market with these fakers simply encourages our children to listen to crap music. These people are making money out of the talent of the real stars – the people who write these songs they sing and who can play instruments instead of pretending to strum at a guitar pathetically while on stage (Yes, I’m taking to you A-1!). I say give the real people a chance, it is because of pathetic talent that we see today that the youth is faced with so much pressure regarding fashion, attitude, etc. No you don’t NEED to get your hair like Victoria bloody Beckham, okay?!

As one good member of Dooyoo was kind to point out, he recently witnessed U2 using a backing track in one of their performances…okay, that’s IS a wee bit disappointing, but we do know that U2 actually have talent
and can play their instruments, Bono CAN sing live – I saw him about two years ago in concert and he was pretty amazing – I recently saw Samantha Mumba too and sorry, guess what? – miming all the way. I think she might’ve just used a cd player hooked up to the speakers it was that poor in quality.

I know that all bands at one time or another mime, but that is not the argument here. I’m arguing against the idea of manufactured bands. I believe that these people are just being used themselves for making money for the record companies. The record companies know that the public go wild over a few shabby ballads sung by five photogenic people and so capitalise on that. Take a look at ‘Hearsay’ – or should I saw the former ‘Hearsay’ – how much money did they actually make? I’m not sure of exact figures but I read that the record company responsible for them made around three times as much collectively…and all they had to do was put an ad in the paper to draw these suckers in, I think I might try it.

Don’t get me entirely wrong here, I DO actually like some Boybands/Girlbands…in fact I’m sure I like at least one song from all of them! I mean, who hasn’t hit the dance floor after a few beers to bust a few moves to the latest Atomic Kitten track, eh? In fact I might even sound really hypocritical here by saying I have every Westlife album (all two of them), Fives first album…and as a matter of fact, I actually did security at Westlife’s concert at my hometown! So I am not biased against the bands all the time – I just don’t like the front they put on, that’s all. I don’t agree with the manufactured band because I think that it holds other talent back. In fact, I’ll list why I hate the idea…and why it can be a good idea, just to be balanced…

Reasons to hate:

1/I think it holds other rea
l talent back by flooding the market with repetitive, predictable songs, that capture the young eyes and ears of our youth, showing them mediocre talent and therefore letting the public believe that ‘This is it…it don’t get no better than this…’

2/I hate the fronting of these people. Living the high life and complaining of ‘working hard’…the shiny, sequined decorated world they live in is far from tough. Maybe they should live in the real world and try watching the television news and see what’s really going on.

3/I do not believe that these people can call themselves musicians when 99% of them probably cannot play so much as a triangle; they do not write their own material and therefore should not be respected when they call themselves ‘artists’ and blather on about their material that means so much to them…and if I hear one more ‘artist’ thank Jesus when they receive an award…I’m going to scream…

Reasons to love:

1/They can give good performances sometimes and some of the songs can be good…. I got to admit it.

2/They can provide a good role model for kids and give them someone to look up to…although this illusion is often shattered by their sometimes-silly actions coupled with the tabloids…

Well, that is the end and if I receive any more constructive criticism, I will probably flip out again and change this again…this is my argument, take it or leave it…

I rest my case…
