Advantages: Mellow Vibes Man!

Disadvantages: May Be Seen As Uncool.

Bacharach wrote most of his truly memorable songs before I was even a twinkle in my mother's eye! Some may prefer to listen to more upto date music, but don't forget, quality lasts for decades(unless your Mozart, then it lasts for centuries!).

You have probably heard some of his music through films, but perhaps you didn't realise the music was Burt Bacharach's. Who can forget Paul Newman and his bit of 'totty' riding a bike together in 'Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid?" You don't remember? Well what about if you try to picture them frolocking to a backgound of 'Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head!" Ooh it was sexy!!

Is that film a bit old for you? Well what about the opening credits to Julia Roberts film,'My Best Friends Wedding?' Don't you remember the song 'Wishin' And Hopin'." The style of the music really gave the film that extra bit of style.

If you want to check out Bacharachs most memorable hits, try getting hold of Dionne Warwick's 'Essential Collection.' You should be able to get it in the discount section of the music department at you're local Woolworths. I did, and it's great. All his best hit's are there, and I can assure you it's a really cool sound to play in the background when you have friends for dinner!
You may not be a huge Warwick fan but don't be put off, it's the songs and the fact that her voice suites them that makes it a great album to chill to.

She sings songs that go back as far as 1963 with'Anyone Who Had A Heart'. But other great tracks include;'A House Is Not A Home.'(1964), 'Close To You.'(1964)also recorded by the Carpenters,'Do You Know The Way To San Jose.'(1968),'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself.'(1968), 'I'll Never Fall In Love Again.'(1969), and that old cracker 'Alfie'(1967), which you might
associate with Cilla Black, but is much better!

The album demonstrates what a prolific song writer Bacharach was back in the sixties. So many of his works you will recognise, probably not realising that they were written by the man himself. There must be loads of albums out there with his greatest hits, featuring different artists, the Carpenters also recorded a lot of his songs, and I also like their interpretations of them.

One of my favourite recordings is 'I Say A little Prayer', sung by Arethra Franklin. Her version of the song, for my money, is the best, bringing to it that early Mowtown earthy sound.

Bacharach's music has travelled the test of time well, Gabrielle recorded an excellent version of 'Walk On By' a few years ago, bringing Bacharachs work to a whole new audience. I also saw him perform with Jules Hollands Rhythm And Blues Orchestra recently on BBC2, and it was great.

So if you fancy some classic mellow vibes, check out Burt Bacharach's music. I think you will agree that it's...nice...
