Disadvantages: Cost of a good instrument

Since the age of 8 (that'll be 9 years now) i've been playing the cello. The enjoyment that i've got out of this marvellous instrument is pleantiful. I have been playing in the Hampshire County Youth Orchestra for 3 years now and this summer we are going on tour to Chile. The opportunities you get once you join an orchestra are great. I've played in concerts in many venues across the South, like the Anvil in Basingstoke, I've played in the Royal Albert Hall (an experience that was so great i guess i'll never forget it), and have a day of coaching every year from the LSO (London Symphony Orchestra). I wouldn't swap these kind of things for anything else. The Cello is a marvellous instrument, and orchestral playing is such a wonderful experience.
I have seen many people try to learn instruments but then give up after a year or so, but i would strongly encourage young people to stick with their instrument and see what kind of opportunities arise when you are of a good enough standard to join an orchestra.

Reading juthanisamir's comments on this site about their friends taking the mick because they play the cello rings slightly true to my experiences at Primary School, but i reccomend performing at school and college concerts, playing a solo or something, and showing off your tallent and enjoyment of the instrument as a good way to gain your friends' respect. It worked for me.

Stick by your cello even through hard times. There have been times when i thought of giving it up, but looking back now i'm so glad that i didn't.
