Advantages: sounds good, not too high or low key, useful
Disadvantages: too big, slips without stopper, too long to unpack
Hello. I would just like to say that I have been playing the cello for 6 years. I find it so humiliating taking the big clunky instrument the school bus. It's like everyone stares at you thinking 'loser' she plays the cello. Thank God my Dad collects me after orchestra on Mondays (which is the same day as my lesson) because the bus is even more full on the way home because nobody has any chance of missing it. I would like some advice on playing the cello. I am at grade 5 and I haven't a clue about the scales which my tutor thinks I know because I pretend to play along with her so she wont hear any mistakes. Do any of you readers know any good websites that lay out the fingering clearly because she just confuses me. Thank you for reading my opinion. I hope you all get on well playing the cello. Goodbye.

- 15/10/02 I wish I'd played the cello too. I learnt the flute at school and now I think it's a bit of a girly instrument which doesn't suit my personality (I hope). Noone could accuse the cello of being girly! And it'll be to your advantage later: the average non-school orchestra only wants a couple of flautists, whereas there are quite a lot of cellos. You can also play in string quartets, which must be great fun. The cello makes such a rich powerful sound. I once saw Paul Tortellier in a televised masterclass and he said "if everyone knew what joy it is to play the cello, all the world would play the cello!" Scales are a nightmare though, but don't stress too much: I failed the scales part of my last flute exam because I couldn't be bothered to practise them but I still passed the exam overall with a merit. However, recently it's dawned on me that scales aren't just designed to bore you rigid or teach you about keys but to improve your technique. I expect lots of flautists will protest now... |

- 15/10/02 I think the cello is a lovely instrument, so don't be ashamed of it. I'd love to learn how to play that, or even more the harp.
Are there any harp teachers from the Essex area writing here? :o) |
