Should acts like Eminem and Marilyn Manson be Censored?
This depends - censored HOW for one start - to be completely not allowed to swear would be ridiculous and to not be allowed sing about sex and drugs would kill rock 'n' roll wouldn't it ? :o)
For starters if swearing in songs was censored it would destroy many many classic songs in my collection how could you replace Rage against the machine's " F**K you I won't do what you tell me.." and what would become of Nine Inch Nails ' Closer' ??? to name just a couple.
To censor work by artists like and including Eminem and Marilyn Manson is insanity and could live music performances BE censored ? Hmmmm. To me so long as you are not forced to listen is not a problem, is like the sex and violence and death on the TV - you don't like it change the channel or turn it off.
I think that the parental Advisory stickers are there for a reason, people should be warned that some material has the potential to offend, is fair. If you don't like it then don't listen to it really.
Once a person reaches a 'certain age' when they in theory have the intelligence to understand and choose their own music then wheres the problem. Personally I don't like 'pop' or 'dance' or most of the 'gangsta rap' the last I find most worrying - half of the stuff I have tried listening to is full of daft macho plain *stupid* bull s**t full of guns shooting killing for respect and 'Hoe's' and being a big hard man in gang-land I really can't find much sense in it. But that said I don't like it so I don't listen to it.
Another thing that bugs me is little kids dressing up older....influenced by 'pop stars' and the like it was seen in the time of the Spice girls.....kids in mini-skirts and thongs is not a good way to go. Least if you kid is into rock chances are they'll be slouching round in baggy combats and XL band T-shits for most of their teens, or become a baby-goth...
Swearing is not an issue with me really, I suppose it is offensive to some but not I, is just one of those things. To me it depends how the words are used......My little boy for example comes out with some choice words now and then but knows whats what and where the lines are drawn. He picked up more nasty words at nursery and school because the term D*ck Head definitely isn't one in use around the house.... Grrrr...go figure.
All we can do is trust in a half decent upbringing so that people have the sense to UNDERSTAND the music they listen to, true some has shocking lyrics, some is noise just for fun and some is meaningful. But people should have the choice to listen to what the like, and have the sense to know what it's about.
With all the swearing, nudity, sex and drug references on TV and all over the media how can we see fit to censor acts such as these ? Are we going to censor everything ? Don't be silly.
Parental Advisory is there for a reason though if parents are not capable or interested in advising then maybe the way to go may be a 15 sticker on some albums and age being checked at live gigs.
Is a hard topic, I want a more specific question !!
Thanks for reading.
Summary: censored HOW ? no sex and drugs = no Rock 'n' Roll

a-true-ben - 31.12.07 'Killing in the name' is censored on the Guitar Hero computer game. I can't remember how (not having my own copy) but I remember playing with a friend a couple of week's ago and commenting on it. |
