Charlotte Church would probably have had a really great singing voice, if she had had the time to develop it as most singers do. Instead she has been catapulted into the spotlight of the media, and is left in an impossible position. Does she sing the kind of repertoire which will train her voice, or does she pretend to be a trained singer already and sing the repertoire people want to hear? Her teacher seems to have allowed her to plump for the second option, and should be thouroughly ashamed.

I mean that thing that made her famous - an Ave Maria by Caccini or someone. She took breaths in the middle of words, she missed top notes frequently, her voice wobbled in a way that had nothing to do with vibrato. Whoever let her look so stupid on stage needs their head seeing to.

And I'm not saying this because I think it is particularly unfair on better performers that their thunder should be stolen by a young girl, but rather because it is very unfair on Charlotte Church. She simply wasn't ready. And there is a real chance that her potential career will be ruined. Once the cherub-factor wears off, she will be just another media cast-off, and they'll move on to someone else. Meanwhile her training has clearly slowed, due to the demands on her to perform, and she will probably be only an average adult singer. What a shame.
