Advantages: Remembering the good times
Disadvantages: some poor tracks to wade through
Chris De Burgh is a classic Singer Songwriter who has a talent unlike many others.
We all remember him for Lady in Red but how many of us have gone out of their way to buy albums without that particular song in it like the one I would like to write about today.
I stumbled across Chris de Burgh's Footsteps album. What is it? well it is a compilation of older style songs ranging from feel good factor songs to sadder wistful songs and then the more up tempo style. He was inspired by these songs in his earlier days as a budding singer /writer. He produced this album as a wistful memory of those earlier times.
I think it is a must have for all those Chris de Burgh fans as it took me back several years to a time when I was a young girl listening to music at my Nan's house on a Saturday teatime. We always went there every Saturday.
Nostagia crept up quite quickly whilst listening.
Do not be afraid to give it a go as you may as I did find yourself either humming or singing along with it. Words are included.
1. First steps
Is a song played on the piano with chris singing with a orchestral background to it. Which doesn't last very long. almost a prelude.
2. Turn Turn Turn
A classic song which he does well and I found myself singing a long with it as I remembered nearly all the words.
It reminded me of the seasons and life. In its own way a very political statement.
3. The long and winding road
Paul Mc Cartneys song Chris De Burghs version of it.
Well sung again and I think I preferred it.
4. Africa
I have never heard this one before so I was surprised when it sounded like it should have been something Lionel Richie could have sung.
Quite upbeat and the words were apt for the title. But a little lost on me.
Not my favorite.
5. Without you
He did a good cover of this one and it took me back to my teens listening to it once more although I think it was Bread that bought this one out first.
Very good version that could never be copied succesfully.
6. Where have all the flowers gone?
A good question ask the girls! Took me back again to my childhood as my uncle had this record playing every saturday for years. When we visited him.
7. Sealed with a kiss
Sending all his love to his sweetheart ,sending me back in time!
Another classic.
8. Blackbird
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
First line of this song.
Seemed to be preoccupied with Blackbirds and the dark night?
It was ok but not my favorite.
9. We can work it out
Done originally by the Beatles and I have to say he kept to the original version fairly closely.
10. All along the Watchtower
This was another one I was unfamiliar with, it is a Ballad mostly orchestrated with subtle undertones. But was worth the listen.
11. Corrina Corrina
A love story
Not one I was familiar with.
12. Rhythm of the rain/crying in the rain
Listen to the rhythm of the pouring rain,
Crying in the rain. The two were cleverly intertwined and it worked.
13. Polly Von
A story about a tragic killing of Polly Von and the lament of the lover who killed her.
Another first for me and I liked it.
14. American Pie
Obviously well known classic done by Madonna of late and previously by Don McLean.
15. The last thing on my mind
A farewell and a tale of regret?
Which in the right frame of mind would have me reduced to tears.
But I was in a seriously mellow mood so was ok.
16. Footsteps
He hears footsteps He hears voices He sees Faces
I want to hang myself ?
I did not like this last one it was not a song I would remember well.
Nor would want to listen too again
I thought a poor final choise for this rather good album.
But all in all a good listening time was had.
Summary: A generally good album worth the buy. Certainly worth the listenening.
