Advantages: Great all round entertainer
Disadvantages: None
Little did Rodger and Dorothy Webb know when their son, Harry, was born on 14th October 1940, that he would become one of Great Britain's and the worlds favourite entertainers; truly a legend in his own lifetime! Harry Webb? who's he? you may well ask. Harry first started singing at 14, when he was given the part of Ratty in his school's production of "The wind in the Willows". He then formed a band with some school friends called the Quintones. At 16, his father bought him his first guitar and, after leaving school at 17 with one O-level, he started work as a clerk in an office by day, and played in youth clubs and pubs with the Dick Teague Skiffle group by night. Skiffle wasn't the type of music Harry liked playing, The minute he heard Elvis's Heartbreak hotel, he knew the sort of music he wanted to play.He and another member of the skiffle group joined forces to form their own band The Drifters. They left Skiffle far behind and embraced Rock'n'roll in earnest. In 1958 Harry Webb changed his name to Cliff Richard and the rest as they say is history In August 1958 Cliff Richard and The Drifters released their first single "Move it!"and was invited by producer Jack Good, to sing on his T.V show "Oh Boy!" Move it shot to number 2 in the charts. This was the start of a fantastic career. From his first hit "Move it!" in 1958, through to "Millenium prayer in 1999, he's had a string of hits spanning six decades, Having number one hits in the last five, The only artist to ever have achieved this success. He's recently gone into "The Guiness Book of British Hit Singles", for spending more weeks in the British chart than anyone else. The number of weeks his records have stayed in the charts adds up to an astonishing 22 years, or 1,144 weeks to be precise! He met with success in films, Starring in 8 films between 1959-1973. He was voted Top Bo
x Office Star,GB,1962-3 and 1963-4. He has been awarded 2 platinum discs, 13 gold discs and 37 silver discs. He's done 2 successful stage musicals, "Time" and "Heathcliffe"The latter playing the character Heathcliffe from the Emily Bronte novel, Wuthering Heights. Cliff read this book at school and whenever he was asked "what character he would most like to play" he always replied Heathcliffe, Cliff put his own money in this production as no-one was prepaired to give him a chance, it certainley paid off, it sold out each night for a year. Cliff seems to have done everything, what will he surprise us with next? He truly is a showbusiness legend.
