Coldplay are a band that would have been called brit pop if they'd been around a few years ago but are now just alternative. In America only old Pink Floyd loving Grandads would be caught dead listening to them. But they are very easy listening, nad have overtaken The Smiths as depressing music of choice, although they've got a long way to go before they can topple Morrissey and Marr as kings of suicide accompaniment music. Less annoying than Toploader but less raw than The Stereophonics and Travis, Colplay have corned the market in politely angst ridden teens. I saw Coldplay at the NME Awards Tour before they released their album. I'd heard their EP, and with about 20 other people, stood and watched in amazement as a superb new band took the stage. Everyone else had left the room until the next act - afterall, they'd never heard of Coldplay, probably not worth their while. It turns out I got in while the going was good.
