Advantages: wonderful rich vocals and guitar sound, still recording and releasing records

Disadvantages: not enough albums released

When Counting Crows first appeared on the UK music scene, they somehow managed to completely pass me by.

This was, I suppose, for two reasons:

Firstly, because they didn't have a massive impact on the charts.

Secondly, because I have this long standing belief that popular music isn't worth listening to.

How wrong was I?

I first heard "Long December" when I was chatting to someone on Napster about my favourite artist, Tom Petty. He said that if I liked Tom Petty, I might well like Counting Crows. He was right. I downloaded "Long December" and was blown away by its majestical beauty. I have to admit that I am still somewhat confused by the line "The smell of hospitals in winter" - After all, I wasn't aware that their smell was at all seasonal.

The following day, I went to the local record store and purchased "August & Everything After", "Recovering The Satellites" and "This Desert Life" on CD. They have been played in the car ever since.

A few weeks later, I got hold of "Across A Wire" and realied that not only were this band great on album, bet they can really play well live.

Their new album is out on Monday and, if their other releases are anything to go by, it's set to become a classic.
