Neil Finn - Manchester Apollo - 11.5.01 It could have been oh so dreary and yet it turned out to be one of the finest gigs this year. How much of this was down to Neil Finn is debatable, but when there is a musical marriage of two of the greatest ever bands on stage you can't help but stand in awe. Following on from the legendary New Zealand show it was Manchester's chance to see Neil Finn, Johnny Marr and Ed and Phil from Radiohead - its the sort of collective that Jools Holland would be left screaming "Please let me join in at" in that ever so smug way he does. Lots of people seem to look to Oasis as being the new Beatles, but I think that Crowded House are the only band of recent years that can confidently claim that title. Although there music is distinctly unfashionable, often sounding similar to the Beautiful South, Neil Finn's ability to write songs is incredible. The music can often be quite unusual, but it is always melodic, with a sing a long quality, as well as being very beautiful and complex. This ability to write a good melody is what he is most frequently praised for, but he is also a very skilled lyricist and vocalist; he is one of the few people in pop music who is able to carry off such poetic, and often ... I remember way back in the mid to late eighties, I heard a tremendously haunting song on the radio. Unfortunately this song never really managed to rise up to the giddy heights of the top ten or even the top twenty, but was nevertheless an extremely well written and performed song. This track was none other than 'Don't Dream It's Over' by the antipodean band Crowded House. A few years later I really got into music.
