David Bowie…….The Ultimate Rebel………

I am a big fan of Mr Bowie and have been for a long time. I think the first time I heard him I was flying over to Glasgow as a young teenage kid and heard this song called “Starman”..What a great little number that was, then when I saw the man himself on Top of The Pops, I just went wow!!…….

Here was this guy with that Ziggy haircut, face painted with a zig zag and a short bodysuit. This was something else back then and when he performed you could see that you were watching a legend being born……

That haircut was to become so popular and I even had my own cut the Ziggy way for about a year, I found it matched the earring and it had style. It was so popular you just had to go in to the barbers and ask for a “Ziggy”..

Bowie over a period of 5 years was to release so many cracking songs and brilliant albums, his best work of course being that masterpiece “ Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars”. God what an album that was, I still feel the hairs on my neck tingle with the thought of that album. I remember when Bowie killed of the Ziggy period, death of an era…For younger readers Bowie had created a character that he called Ziggy Stardust whom he killed when he totally changed his image……

He also wrote singles for other groups including an all time favourite of mine “ All the Young Dudes” by Mott the Hoople. Now that song alone is sheer talent and I can still hear it run through my head…..

My favourite Bowie singles, my god now that is difficult as there were so many. “Life on Mars” must be one along with “Five Years”…My favourite album apart from “Ziggy” has to be “ Hunky Dory “ as it had that great single “Changes” on it, another great song. That I think is why David Bowie
is such a star because he wrote so many great songs. It wasn’t just that the song was great, some of the lyrics were just so great. Although some of his lyrics were downright weird…lol….

He also tried his hand at acting, I remember my daughter being scared by him in that great little movie “The Labryinth”. Bowie was great in the film and proved that his talent was more than just singing….

Then there was his sexuality, he made it known he was bi-sexual but was it to sell records or not. He and Elton John are big friends as are he and Mick Jagger. Not that his sexuality ever bothered me, he wouldn’t get that close to my back for me to worry about it.

Anyway in summing up I have to say he goes down as an icon of the Pop industry. I had to throw the word icon in as everybody in the pop world seems to use it now. If you haven’t ever listened to much Bowie get yourself “Ziggy Stardust”, put it on, turn off the lights and become a fan. His music just goes on as my eldest son is just a big a Bowie fan as I am…….

Thing is there are a lot of crap stars out there now, it just seems easier for someone to manipulate the pop charts, but back then to see David Bowie as Ziggy was something else..I remember in one of his songs he had that famous line that spelt out the fall of Ziggy…” When the kids had killed the man he had to break up the band”….

For me a bit of Bowie died when he killed Ziggy……………..

Anyway thanks for the read,

Great op, I've always been rather fond of Bowie myself, think I might go and listen to some of his music now, thanks.

Tried to comment before, but switched to AOL and they let me do nothing. Good op, not my scene though.
