... when it was in the charts but hadn't heard any others and thought that they would all sound the same. Just goes to show that you should never judge a book by it's cover. Everyone of his songs that I have heard all have their own different styles and ideas hidden in them. His singing reminds me a bit of Bob Dylan and Tom Petty but I wouldn't like to say he sounds like them as he has his own style. But I do think of them when I hear him. This Years Love has been described to me as being corny but having jus...more

Premium Review David Gray in general: White Ladder-The Best Album Ever (240 words)

This has to be the best album I have heard, its not like most albums where you say oh I Like 4 or 5 tracks on it,every single track on this album is magical. I had never really heard of David Gray before until I heard Babylon on the radio,I thought this was one of the best songs I had ever heard,Like all his songs it was are heartfelt ballad, like Irish country music with a bit of a rocky jazzing up.It was a song I certainly felt deserved the number one slot. The track really has got Davids career moving and has led to this album being so succesful. My favourite track is This years Loving, this was a song I couldn`t stop listening to on holiday and for some ...  Read the complete review

I apologize in advance, but until mid-2000, I had never heard of this singer-songwriter. Until that is, the Summer Hit "Babylon" graced our eardrums. How similar it is to Paul Simon's "Graceland", or is it just me? A very good song though, which I find myself singing in the bath, waiting for a bus, etc... Then came the follow-up which sounds just the same (inevitable, I suppose), with an equally catchy chorus. However, I'm afraid I can't even remember the title, it's so wishy-washy. I haven't even bought any of his albums and have only heard 2 of his tracks, I'm sure he's an excellent bloke, but ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review David Gray in general: I didn't want to buy this album but I am glad I did (230 words)

I bought david Gray's album White Ladder for a friend of mine but I have to admit that I play it more than he does. When he first played Sail Away in the car I was hooked. He has an idiosyncratic voice that can either grate at your ears or sound like the most beautiful thing in the world. Happily we both think he is wonderful. I liked the song Babylon from when it was in the charts but hadn't heard any others and thought that they would all sound the same. Just goes to show that you should never judge a book by it's cover. Premium Review why so popular all of a sudden (441 words)

Firstly appologies as this was one of the first opinions I wrote in a period when I thought Dooyoo was never gonna last long enough to make it worth while getting too deep. I have updated this opinion on the basis of a comment made by peakly. Please read his comment. David Gray's album White Ladder was hailed as an album of such great quality that it was one of the best albums of the 1999. Who makes this value judgement? This album is only better than others because of the marketing involved. Music has become about a manufactured product. The sponteneity of music is fast vanishing. Bands are not bands anymore - they are puppets of the music ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review David Gray in general: A live God (152 words)

I saw David Gray for the first time in my life on Monday. I have had all his 3 Lps from their respective release dates. I always thought he was very good and suspected live might be less appealing that on record. It was an awesome performnace by both him and his band. All the recorded material took on a much more 4 dimensional feel with a corking light show. I suspect he is a soul singer although the classification may seem incongrous for one so white and acoustic. If there is a criticism of the set it was that it could have gone on for much longer with a bit more of the older material. Only 2 tracks from each of his first 2 LPs ...  Read the complete review
