Advantages: cheesy, lively, happy, feel good music!
Disadvantages: embarrasing when your mum/dad/auntie/grandparen ts start dancing to it... drunk!
Even though most of us students in Hull weren’t even born in the 1970’s we have a 70’s/80’s night in the Student Union displaying the fact that Disco music, no matter how cheesy or old, will always live on! Disco music is great and what’s even better is that most of our parents have all the hits from way back when so we don’t even need to red-facedly go into HMV to buy the hits. I thought I’d base my opinion on one of my favourite styles with one of my favourite Disco songs – Michael Jackson’s “Blame it on the Boogie” – it was either that or YMCA – but that’s just plain cheesey! “Don’t blame it on the Sunshine, Don’t blame it on the Moonlight, Don’t blame it on the Goodtimes Blame it on the Boogie” …indeed! ***Sunshine*** Well no matter what you think of it, where you are listening to it you always think of something bright and Sunshine-like. It always brings a smile to my face every time I hear the intro to YMCA (da da daaaa da da da da da da daaaaa) and everyone runs straight to the dance floor. Note the fact that most of them are horribly drunk and are fully prepared to make total prats out of themselves! And remember the things they used to wear in those days – who did Rasputin? Ah that’s it – Boney M, their clothes were all glittery and cool and funky! Even if you’re too young to remember (like me!) your Mums will tell you about them and you can see pictures and music videos on TV. That’s the great thing about Disco music – it brings sunshine and everything glitzy into people’s life. Parties, Disco’s and Cheesy nightclubs wouldn’t be the same without hits of days gone by such as “YMCA”, “Disco Inferno” and “Oops Upside Your Head”. Another thing about Disco now, peop
le go out and wear flares n afros n stuff for a laugh. They do it and have a smile on their faces whilst doing so! ***Moonlight*** “Night Fever, Night feveeeeeerrr, we know how to do it!” Ok… so when’s the most appropriate time to go out and disco? Yep! At night, by moonlight. After a hard day at work (or at uni!?!), getting down on the dance floor and boogying can make a really bad day into one that ends really well. Barry White is one who loves to sing his stuff by moonlight. Sexy and oh so very cheesy – he makes us want to dance or snuggle up to someone all night long! And I’m sure there are loads of gals reading who have given their neighbours (asleep!) a lovely, loud, drunk rendition of “I Will Survive” after pub hours with her girlie friends. Great girlie drunk anthem for the early hours of the morning – especially when you’ve just broken up with a bloke who’s caused a bit of upset! ***Good Times*** “Its Raining Men” by the Weather Girls is a great feel good tune. And this song triggers off so many good memories whenever its played. Oh and “Oops Upside Your Head!” Fantastic! “I will Survive” as well! Oh wow! What great memories of us girls all dancing and singing our heads off to it at Karaoke (well, trying to sing!) Disco music gives us, and reminds us of very good times. The happy, bouncy, lively cheesiness of the whole genre just makes you want to put on that Afro and do the whole Night Fever thang! Its hard NOT to be happy when you’re listening to the warblings of Mr Jackson and Donna Summer. And if it really irritates you then you can always kick the stereo system or throw it at the wall – err...Umm…. Usually the chance of a Disco arises because of a special occasion. Be it a birthday, anniversary or wedding – and the cheesier the m
usic the better the time everyone will have. All generations know the music and its just great to dance about and have a laugh to. It gets embarrassing when your mum starts to dance the steps to YMCA drunk though… ***Boogie*** The bestest part of Disco music is the boogying! As Mr Jackson Sings - “The magic music grooves me The dirty rhythm moves me The devil's gotten to me Through his dance I'm full of funky fever And fire burns inside me Boogies got me in a Super trance” Dancing is the main part of Disco music – well d’oh! And hands up those who know the dance moves to YMCA? Tragedy? Staying Alive? Blame it on the Boogie? OWN UP! If you walked into a Disco/Club atmosphere and this sorta music came on – you know almost everyone there knows some of the dance routine! “Ah ah ah ah Staying Alive, Staying Alive!” and at least its better than waving your hands around with a glow stick in a field to a dance track or something (no offence – just a comparison, cus I’ve done the glow stick thang!) And if you don’t know the routine you’ll end up learning it by the end of the night. So that’s it, my opinion on Disco music – not loved by everyone, but it puts a smile on people’s faces anyway… “I just cant, I just cant, I just cant control my feet…” I’m sorry – you’d never have guessed I’m studying for a degree in music would you!
